MSNBC: Democrat Shelley Simonds Challenges Disputed Ballot Va. House of Delegates Race

‘This is a spoiled ballot’

GEIST: "Now the latest in the battle for control of Virginia House of Delegates. It all comes down to a race that ended in a tie, 11,608 to 11,608. The tiebreaker in which the winning candidate’s name would be drawn from an antique pitcher was supposed to be held this morning. But now Virginia’s Board of Elections has put that drawing on hold as Democrat Shelley Simonds says the disputed ballot that tied the race with incumbent Republican David Yancey never should have been counted. Simonds is expected to file the legal paperwork today, the action sets up never-ending recounts. The Board postponed the drawing because, quote, drawing names is an action of last resort. Before the 2017 elections, Republicans had a 66-34 advantage in Virginia’s House of delegates. As it currently stands, they control 50 seats, the Democrats have 49, with this race still to be decided."
