Andrea Mitchell to Tom Harkin: Is Hillary ‘Too Conservative’ for Iowa Dems?
MITCHELL: “Well, she was also there to pay tribute to you as were so many. And that’s why, as you say, and that's why there was, as you say, 10,000 now you’re telling me, we thought it was slightly smaller. But it was a great crowd and they all loved Tom Harkin and Ruth Harkin, your partner, who has been such a political presence there. But a lot of the young folks I talked to, millennials, they say they are not sure where Hillary Clinton stands on some big issues for them. On war and peace - they think she is too hawkish. On being too tight with Wall Street - they are not sure she really represents, let’s say what Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren or some more progressive Democrats would represent. Is she too conservative for Iowa Democrats?”
HARKIN: “Not at all. Listen, a lot is to be developed yet. First of all, there is a myth that somehow Iowans didn’t like Hillary. That’s just not true. Iowans love her. What happened back in 2008, we had a phenomenon by the name of Barack Obama who came out early and got the organization, got all these young people out and that was sort of the end of it. I don’t think it meant any lack of support or affection for Hillary Clinton. And then for the last four or five years she has been secretary of state, she's not been able to do things politically. Then she wrote her book, got her book finished, and it’s interesting that her first foray back into politics was here in Iowa. So I think you're going to see a lot of support for Hillary Clinton.”
