Later on, John Oliver took the stage to accept the award for Best Writing of a Variety Series for his HBO progam Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. 

While giving a haphazard acceptance speech which included thanking Oprah Winfrey because she was sitting in the front row and it “seemed inappropriate not to,” he made a reference to Chappelle and his shoutout.

“Like Dave Chappelle, I would like to unexpectedly thank D.C. public schools because — I think it would be great to get it started trending on Twitter for no reason tonight whatsoever,” Oliver said. “So if you are tweeting about the Emmys at home,  please use the #DCPublicSchools.”
