Wendy Patrick: Monkey Selfie Lawsuit Could Create ‘Slippery Slope’ for Animals Being Able To Bring Lawsuits
‘But the fact we can’t get through this story without laughing doesn’t bode well for its success on the merits’
RUSH EXCERPT:
PATRICK: "I think it looks bad for Peter from the outset that their client didn’t care enough to show up in court. The monkey wasn’t there. This was a 45-minute hearing and the issue was authorship. PETA wants a broad interpretation of authorship that would include the monkey. But the fact we can’t get through this story without laughing doesn’t bode well for its success on the merits. Not to mention that would create an enormous slippery slope for animals being able to bring out lawsuits."
