PAINTER: “Anything that interferes with his ability to be the best possible president of the United States is an ethical problem. His obligations are to the United States. He is going to take an oath next Friday to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States. He will have to defend us against enemies, foreign and domestic. This is a dangerous world we live in. We can’t have a president tied down with personal business holdings. We would not want to have FDR at the time of World War II if he had properties in Berlin and Frankfurt. That would have been a disaster. I think it’s time to sell the business and be president.”
