MSNBC: Jan. 6 Committee Issues Subpoenas to Four Trump Aides

‘In a statement, former President Trump says the requests were part of a partisan exercise and suggested he would exert executive privilege in an attempt to block them’

EXCERPT:

GEIST: "We'll dig into that in just a minute, but let’s start with the House Select Committee investigating the January 6th insurrection issuing its first subpoenas yesterday to four of former president Donald Trump's closest allies: former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, former Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications Dan Scavino, former White House Adviser Steve Bannon, and former Pentagon Chief of Staff Kash Patel. The committee says it is seeking information about Trump’s actions leading up to and during the riot and attack and demanding those four men turn over documents by October 7th. They're also ordered to submit to depositions the following week. The subpoenas say Meadows and Scavino were in contact with the organizers of the rally that preceded the violence, and Meadows took a number of steps to undermine the election results leading up to January 6. Scavino allegedly met with Trump on January 5th to discuss ways to persuade members of Congress against certifying Joe Biden’s victory. In Bannon's case the committee says he attended a January 5th meeting at a D.C. hotel to discuss plans to overturn the election results. That same day he told listeners on his podcast, quote, all hell is going to break loose tomorrow. That's Steve Bannon. Meanwhile, Patel allegedly was in contact constantly with Meadows on January 6 and took part in discussions with senior Pentagon officials regarding Capitol security. Bannon, Meadows and Scavino did not immediately response in request for comments, while Patel issues a statement that reads in part, 'I will continue to tell the truth to the American people about the events of January 6.' In a statement, former President Trump says the requests were part of a, quote, partisan exercise, and suggested he would assert executive privilege in an attempt to block them, Mika. So some of this comes out also of Woodward and Costa’s book, we had them on earlier this week, and they had many of these details, including Steve Bannon sitting in a war room on January the 5th, on the eve of January 6 attack, at a hotel in Washington, talking about all hell breaking loose and how they were going to kill the Biden presidency in the crib, as he's alleged to have put it."
