AOC on Nuclear Power: ‘Indian Point Should Have Been Shutdown a Long Time Ago’

‘I’m not an energy scientist and I’m not going to act like one’

EXCERPT:

OCASIO-CORTEZ: “We don’t take a hard stance yes or no. It is about the specific solution. You know, folks have also brought up that nuclear technology has changed a lot, so I think that is certainly something to consider in the conversation. And this is an ongoing debate. You know, there are a lot of environmental concerns. As sea levels rise, we have nuclear facilities now that I'm frankly very concerned about like Indian Point that should have been shut down a long time ago. And as sea levels rise, it will threaten the structural integrity of that facility, we will have to figure out what to do with that nuclear waste. But that being said, I think it is a conversation we have to have. I’m not an energy scientist and I’m not going to act like one. We know the science of climate change. And we know that we need to get to 100% clean and renewable energy as quickly as possible. So I think there is a whole set of conversations to be had there, but for now, right now, we just need to get — like, this Congress just finds a resolution saying we need to fix the problem to be controversial. So we are trying to take everyone along one step at a time and once we get to that place we will have that conversation.”
