Shannon Watts: ‘We Give Dangerous People’ Full Access to Weapons and Ammunition

‘It is Congress’s job to fix that’

EXCERPT:

WATTS: "Well, first of all, we know that background checks work. Since 1994, when federal background checks were required on licensed gun sales, over 3.5 million gun sales have been stopped mainly to felons and domestic abusers and others. When we look at the states, a state like Connecticut that passed strong background checks, we saw gun homicides and suicides fall significantly. In a state like Missouri that had background checks and then overturned them, we saw gun suicides and homicides spike. So these laws work. That is an NRA talking point the President is using. We also know we have the same rates of mental illness as any other high income country. We all play video games and we all watch movies. What is different about America? The fact we give dangerous people full access to dangerous weapons and ammunition, full stop. And that is what our Congress has to do. They have to fix that. That is their job. And we are calling on the Senate Majority Leader to bring bills that have already passed the house to a vote and Americans can support that by texting the word 'Checks' to 64433 and tell your senators we demand action now."
