VELSHI: “Welcome to both of you. Thank you for being here. Jennifer, this is an interesting discussion, because there may be limitations to what somebody who doesn’t want to see a justice put on by Donald Trump can do legislatively, but there is a protest out there. How do you see this playing out?”
RUBIN: “Well I think you’re exactly right. It will come down to those two women, Senators Murkowski and Collins, and the question is do they really want to stand up for their life-long pledge to their voters that they were pro-choice? Because they must understand that a vote for anyone on that pre-approved list, and it was pre approved, it was crafted by the federal society, Leonard Leo, will intact reverse Roe. And i Think these people who say, ‘Oh, they’re not going to reverse Roe,’ they’ll just chip away a little bit here and there.”
VELSHI: “Right.”
RUBIN: “I think I choose to take them literally on this. This has been the goal for 40 years. The people who brought Donald Trump and delivered him to the White House want this, and I think they will not be disappointed. So then the question is, if they’re not able to with stand this onslaught, not able to hold back a justice that would reverse Roe, what happens? In essence we go to 50 civil wars in each of the states plus the District of Columbia. And here is where I think the Republicans have badly overplayed their hand. There is no — and I mean no significant constituency for doing what they want to do, which is — which is criminalizing abortion and punishing women and/or doctors. Poll after poll, 67 percent, 69 percent, 70 percent of people want to keep Roe. And what that means is they want to keep a constitutional protection. If that then goes back to the state legislatures, you’re going to see an uproar. And I think if we haven’t already seen women mobilize through the #MeToo movement —“
VELSHI: “Right.”
RUBIN: “— through the election of Donald Trump, through the separation of children, you are going to see even more women in the streets, on the ballot, and voting to throw people out who do not recognize women’s personal autonomy.”
