Mr Booker, 44, is projected to beat Republican Steve Lonegan in a race to replace Senator Frank Lautenberg, a Democrat who died in June.

With 75% of precincts reporting, Mr Booker led Mr Lonegan by 56% to 43%.

The Democratic mayor of New Jersey's largest city will become the second black senator in the current Congress and the first from New Jersey.

A prolific tweeter, with a following five times the population of Newark, he gave his first statement after winning the election on the social media service.

"Thank you so much, New Jersey, I'm proud to be your Senator-elect," Mr Booker tweeted.
