CNN’s Zakaria Warns of Trump: We Have a ‘Slow Degradation’ of Norms, We May Become Turkey in 20 Years

ZAKARIA: "This was exactly the debate that took place during the founding and this is why the impeachment process was put in place. Because the fear was, I think Franklin at this point says, 'The Europeans do it the old-fashioned way, they assassinate the kings they don't like. We're not going to do that. We’re going to try to come up with some other way.' But clearly that doesn’t address this larger issue of the degradation of norms. My big fear is — forget about what happens in the next few years. Will the next person that becomes president say, 'I don’t have to release my tax returns'? Trump did. 'I don’t have to resign from my business practices.' Trump didn’t. 'I don’t have to tell my lawyers to recuse themselves at various points,' and exactly the thing you were saying with Flood. Trump did it. If that becomes true, then what we have is not a one-time blip, but we have a slow degradation of the norms and all of a sudden we’re not that different from Turkey 20 years down the road."
