Gallagher: If Dems Block Pompeo ‘It Does Damage’ the Tradition of Supporting Presidential Nominees

‘I think it just underscores the importance of having someone like Mike Pompeo at the head of the state Department’

EXCERPT:

HEMMER: "Is this North Korea matter a go do you think?"
GALLAGHER: "Well listen, I think it just underscores the importance of having someone like Mike Pompeo at the head of the State Department. And there is no question that he is qualified. I mean, he has had a long and distinguished career in national security, despite the fact he is an army guy. He is by all accounts performed very well at the CIA over the last year, and that also means that he can hit the ground sprinting at a time of crisis in our foreign policy and in the midst of a very complex set of negotiations with the North Koreans. And so I hope the Senate Foreign Relations Committee votes him out positively. I hope he is confirmed expeditiously. I worked on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for two years. I was on the Republican staff during the Obama administration. We confirmed any number of Obama appointees with whom we disagreed; Secretary Kerry, Secretary Clinton were all approved overwhelmingly with 94 votes. And I just worry if the Democrats go down this path it does enormous damage to a tradition of supporting presidential nominees even if you disagree with certain policies, and it also undermines our diplomacy at this critical stage."
