NYT’s Michael Schmidt on Interview with Trump: The President Thinks He Is His Best Spokesman

‘The president thinks he is his best spokesman and was very proud of the tax bill, and I said this is really interesting, why don’t we do this on the record?’

EXCERPT:

SCHMIDT: "We were sitting at a table next to the president’s. We went up and started talking to him and he started talking about the tax bill. He's -- the president obviously thinks he’s the best spokesman and was very proud of his tax bill. And started talking about it and I said, this is all really interesting, well why don't we do this on the record? And he said, you know, OK, let me just finish eating lunch. He was eating a salad. And when he was done, he pulled me aside and we sat at a table just the two of us for about a half hour talking."
