Biography

Andrew Graham Beshear (/bəˈʃɪər/ bə-SHEER; born November 29, 1977) is an American attorney and politician serving since 2019 as the 63rd governor of Kentucky. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the 50th Attorney General of Kentucky from 2016 to 2019. He is the son of former Kentucky governor Steve Beshear.

As attorney general, Beshear sued Governor Matt Bevin several times over issues such as pensions and defeated Bevin by just over 5,000 votes in the 2019 gubernatorial election. Beshear was reelected to a second term in 2023 by a wider margin of 5%. As of 2024, he and Lieutenant Governor Jacqueline Coleman are the only Democratic statewide elected officials in Kentucky. Beshear was seen as one of the leading contenders to be Kamala Harris’s running mate in her 2024 presidential campaign.
