Biography
Anna Coren is an award-winning international correspondent for CNN International, based at the network’s Asia Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong. She joined CNN in 2008 as an anchor and has made the transition to roving international correspondent. The Asian Television Awards named her ‘Best News Presenter/Anchor’ in both 2011 and 2012.
Coren has been a journalist for more than a decade and has reported on location from some of the biggest news events in Asia Pacific over the last couple of years, including the death of Kim Jung Il, the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, Thailand’s worst floods in 50 years, the tourist bus hostage standoff in the Philippines, and the North Korean nuclear crisis. She has been to Afghanistan twice in the last few months, most recently in March 2013 where she was embedded with U.S. Special Forces and was caught in the middle of a firefight with the Taliban.
In her time at CNN, Coren has interviewed some of the world’s top newsmakers, including United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, Thailand’s former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, Australia’s Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Hollywood actors and activists George Clooney and Sigourney Weaver, Australian movie director Baz Luhrmann, and legendary golfer Greg Norman.
Coren led CNN’s special programming ‘Eye On’ series reporting live from Mongolia, Thailand, Macedonia, South Korea and Indonesia, providing viewers with insights about the business, culture and personalities that make each country unique.
Her career in journalism has led her to cover stories around the world, including the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, the terrorist attacks in Bali and London, and the Asian tsunami.
Prior to joining CNN in 2008, Coren held a variety of positions at broadcasters in Australia, most notably at ‘Today Tonight’, a national current affairs program on the Seven Network. In 2006 she also served as the network’s US correspondent based in Los Angeles. Coren began her career with Australia’s Nine Network as a reporter and presenter. She received her Bachelor of Arts in communications from Australia’s Charles Sturt University.
