Biography
Marilyn B. Tavenner served as the Chief Executive of Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services since December 8, 2011. Ms. Tavenner served as Group President for Outpatient Services at HCA Holdings, Inc. (also known as HCA Inc.) since January 1, 2004. Ms. Tavenner served in leadership roles for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for five years from February 2010 to February 2015. Ms. Tavenner was responsible for HCA’s non- hospital based outpatient services.
She was President of the Central Atlantic Division of HCA with operational responsibility for 18 hospitals in Virginia, West Virginia and New Hampshire. Ms. Tavenner is a 22-year veteran of HCA. She began with HCA in 1981 as a Nursing Supervisor at Johnston-Willis Hospital (later renamed Chippenham Johnston-Willis Hospital) in Richmond. After serving in a number of supervisory positions, she became Chief Executive Officer of the hospital in 1993. In 1996, Ms. Tavenner became President of the Richmond Division and in 2001 was appointed Central Atlantic Division President.
She was Administrator of CMS from May 2013 to February 2015, following her service as CMS Acting Administrator from the time of her nomination by President Obama from December 2011 to her confirmation by Congress in May 2013. She also served as Principal Deputy Administrator of CMS from February 2010 to December 2011. Prior to her service with CMS, Ms. Tavenner was Secretary of Health and Human Resources of the Commonwealth of Virginia from January 2006 to February 2010. Preceding her government service, Ms. Tavenner worked for Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) for 25 years in a number of capacities, most recently as President of HCA’s Outpatient Services Group from January 2004 to January 2006. Prior to that, Ms. Tavenner served as a Division President, Market President, hospital Chief Executive Officer and Director of Nursing for HCA.
She has served on the Boards of several organizations, including the American Hospital Association and the Greater Richmond Partnership, which attracts business to the city and its surrounding counties. She has been a Director of Lifepoint Hospitals Inc. since April 17, 2015. Ms. Tavenner is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a Member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Hospital Association. She holds a Master of Healthcare Administration degree and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University.
