Biography
Jessica Aguirre is the 6 and 11 p.m. evening anchor at NBC Bay Area News and host of Class Action, a weekly show focused on improving the state of education in California.
Jessica began her career while attending the University of Miami. Before coming to the Bay Area in 1997 she anchored and reported in Los Angeles and Miami, earning Emmy awards for her series on the struggles of migrant children and for her investigative work on a series on child molesters. She won an Associated Press award for her journey to Cuba to follow in the steps of Cuban boat people trying to make it to the U.S.
As the daughter of immigrant parents, Jessica is fluent in Spanish and deeply involved in organizations that promote literacy and help close the Latino achievement gap including The Silicon Valley Education Foundation, The Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley and El Hogar De Los Ninos, a Bay Area non-profit, which provides education for children in Nicaragua. She is also a member of National Academy of Television, Arts and Sciences.
Her passion for news and global events has taken Jessica from Cuba to England and many places in between. She’s covered natural disasters like Hurricane Andrew, one of the most devastating storms on record and man-made catastrophes like the Oklahoma City bombing, where 168 people died in an attack masterminded by homegrown terrorist Timothy McVeigh. She has covered race riots in Miami as well as prison riots in Atlanta and Louisiana and even an uprising on the island of Cuba. Her reporting has taken her to GITMO, the prison at Guantanamo Bay and to London where she reported on Princess Diana. Most recently she covered the ten year anniversary of 9/11 from ground zero.
Here at home, Jessica is focused on covering laws and events that impact children, from investigative stories that uncover the loopholes set up by Jessica's law to the deteriorating state of education in the public school system.
Jessica resides in the East Bay, with her husband and two daughters where she is a fierce advocate for public school education and a committed school volunteer. Her devotion to learning and supporting schools has parlayed into Class Action, a weekly show focused on improving education in California and can be routinely found on the lecture circuit in the Bay Area discussing education.
