Biography
Hunter was born and raised in Georgia. His life has always been about leadership. Through sports, his church and music, he maximized opportunities to lead teams to a common goal as far back as high school. These opportunities led to being recruited to play football at West Point, Navy and Harvard. Hunter chose to play football at West Point because of the Academy’s storied history as the nation’s premier leadership institution. Hunter graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science degree in General Management with a minor in Civil Engineering.
After graduating from West Point, Hunter became a Lieutenant in the United States Army. He went on to graduate from the Airborne, the Air Assault, and the U.S. Army Ranger Schools. In June 2001, Hunter took command of a rifle platoon with the 101st Airborne Division, which he led into Afghanistan in 2002. Hunter subsequently led another platoon into battle in Iraq in 2003 and was promoted to Captain. In the summer of 2003, Hunter was selected to be an Aide to the Second-in-Command of the 101st Airborne Division. Hunter was awarded two Army Commendation Medals, the Meritorious Service Medal, and a Bronze Star during his 5 years of Active Duty service.
After two combat tours, Hunter decided to return to the private sector. He began a successful career in real estate development with Carter and Associates. He employed his leadership skills to lead and manage large commercial development projects in Atlanta.
Hunter received a letter in the mail calling him back to serve his country yet again. Though he thought his military career was behind him, he knew his duty to his country came first.
Hunter’s third tour of duty in Afghanistan was his most impactful. First, he credits God for bringing him and all his men home safely. Second, he realized that while there was strong leadership in the military, it was in the government where leadership was needed. He realized that America’s greatest threats were from politicians undermining our constitutional values and principles of limited government, free enterprise and individual responsibility.
Hunter was awarded his second Bronze Star for meritorious service during this tour of duty.
When Hunter returned from his third tour he ran for State Senate. Hunter won a seat in the Georgia Senate in 2012 as an outsider, conservative candidate running on a limited government platform that included eliminating the income tax. Since being elected Hunter has been rated among the Top 3 most conservative Senators from Georgia and has been awarded a score of 100% multiple times by the American Conservative Union.
