Biography
George K. Howell works as a national news correspondent for CNN based in Chicago, Ill. Howell covers news in the Mid-West/West Coast regions of the United States, and he also serves as a mentor to up-and-coming broadcast journalists.
Born in Amarillo, Texas, Howell attended high school and college in Austin, Texas, which he considers home. He started working as a broadcaster as a teenager at Stephen F. Austin High School, and later earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from The University of Texas at Austin. While in college, Howell was recognized by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation for Excellence in Journalism.
Howell has been honored with various awards and nominations throughout his career as a journalist. He started out in local news as a reporter in Spokane, Wash. – then moving up the ladder and back home to Austin, where he took on the role of police beat reporter for KXAN-TV 36. From Texas, Howell relocated to Seattle, Wash., where he worked as a general assignments reporter/anchor for KOMO-TV 4. During his time in Seattle, he also had the opportunity to work freelance -- as a general assignments reporter for KIRO-TV 7, and at Seattle’s PBS station, KCTS-9, where he produced and presented short documentary reports. Howell relocated to Atlanta to work part-time at WSB-TV 2, before making the move to CNN Worldwide.
“I can honestly say I am doing exactly what I love to do, each and every day I walk in this building,” Howell said. “My job as a journalist is to always be curious, to ask the right questions, and to provide accurate, compelling reports that bring value to viewers who take time to watch them. It is both an honor and responsibility that I do not take lightly.”
