Before coming to North Carolina in 1997, Wes worked in television news in Columbia and Kansas City, Missouri and in Buffalo, New York. He also worked in media relations in New York City. His media career actually began in his rural Missouri hometown, where his grandfather founded a weekly newspaper. Wes attended the University of Missouri at Columbia and the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Wes is active in volunteer work with several projects and agencies. His wife Kathy is a life-long educator and National Board Certified teacher.
