Biography

Matt Strawn is a founding principal of Next Generation Public Affairs, Inc., a Midwestern-based public affairs firm. Matt has had decades of experience as an entrepreneur, communications professional, public servant and a business and community leader. Strawn specializes in developing and managing messaging, media and public relations campaigns for corporations, non-profit organizations, trade associations, and small businesses.

During a successful career on Capitol Hill, Matt served as Chief of Staff and Counsel to Congressman Mike Rogers (R-Michigan), a member of the power House Energy and Commerce Committee. During his public service career on Capitol Hill, Matt was twice-named by The Hill newspaper as one of the “top 35 under 35” in Washington, DC. Matt returned home to Iowa in 2007 with his wife to raise their young family.

As a community leader, Matt was elected to two terms as chairman of Iowa’s Republican Party, where his leadership and success received state and national attention. Politico named Matt an “emerging political star” to watch, while the Des Moines Register said to “Credit Strawn with GOP’s rebound” in Iowa. Iowa Governor Terry Branstad noted that “the Republican Party of Iowa has been stronger, more visible and imminently more successful since Matt Strawn became our leader.”

Matt’s business-like approach to leading the Iowa GOP yielded incredible results, including an unprecedented increase in party voter registration, record-breaking fundraising, and historic election victories. Matt’s communication skills and public relations efforts were instrumental in protecting Iowa’s First in the Nation status as he negotiated three nationally-televised, prime time presidential debates and was a fixture on national media programs, ranging from NBC’s Meet the Press to Fox News Sunday, advocating for Iowa’s role in the presidential nomination process.

As a business leader, Matt is an equity partner and serves on the boards of multiple technology and software companies. He also played a lead role to bring professional football to Iowa. In 2007, he and his business partners recruited an ownership group to bring the Iowa Barnstormers to downtown Des Moines. Since the team’s return in 2007, the Barnstormers organization is consistently recognized as one of the best operated and successful franchises in the Arena Football League. Matt subsequently sold his interest in the team in 2013.

Matt is a graduate of the Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law (J.D. 2003), where he graduated first in his law school class; the University of Iowa (B.A. 1996); and, Benton Community High School (Van Horne, Iowa), where he is a member of the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Matt serves on the Board of Directors for a number of privately-held technology companies, the Des Moines Area Sports Commission, and the non-profit Iowans Supporting Israel. Matt is a member in good standing of the Maryland State Bar Association. Matt resides with his wife, Erin, and their three children in Ankeny, Iowa.
