Biography

Gregory Reid Wiseman (born November 11, 1975) is an American naval aviator and NASA astronaut. He was the commander of the 2026 Artemis II lunar flyby mission, the first crewed flight around the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. He served as the 17th chief of the Astronaut Office from 2020 to 2022.

Selected as a NASA astronaut in 2009, he flew to the International Space Station in 2014 as part of Expedition 40/41 and earlier served as a U.S. Navy fighter pilot and test pilot.

On April 1, 2026, he launched on Artemis II, becoming the first person to command a lunar mission since Gene Cernan on Apollo 17 and, at age 50, the oldest person to travel beyond low Earth orbit. He is also, along with the other crew members of Artemis II, one of the four humans that have traveled the farthest from Earth.
