Biography
Tiq Milan is the Senior Media Strategist of National News at GLAAD. He’s media trained national advocates like CeCe McDonald and Geena Rocero, helping develop messaging and best practices for crafting their stories and maximizing impact. He also strategizes with national news media outlets about fair and accurate reporting on transgender people and builds media capacity with other LGBT organizations. He is a national spokesperson for the organization discussing the latest developments in transgender rights on CNN’s Reliable Resources, The Katie Couric Show and MSNBC’s Ronan Farrow Daily to name a few.
He recently married re-known Toronto based artist and founder of The People Project, Kim Katrin Milan (Crosby). The duo have already begun to work together speaking at Emerson College for this year’s Trans Awareness Week discussing desire and consent; they will both be at Youth Pride Awards in Boston where Tiq is receiving the Audre Lorde’s Founder’s award and Kim is keynoting.
He was featured in a national media campaign for Live Out Loud’s Homecoming Project, a national campaign that sent successful LGBT people back to their hometown high schools to share, knowledge, experience and lessons learned. He was also documented for LGBTQ Funders Men and Boys of Color Intitiative, GLAAD Award nominated documentary U People, and NewNowNext Festival 2009 featured short film, Realness.
He is a contributing author to the newly released anthology Trans Bodies, Trans Selves, He recently was hosted by Steven Petrow on his column civilities at WashingtonPost.com answering questions from readers about transgender people, language, and nuance. He is also a regular guest on Huff Post Live.
Tiq has also been deeply involved with LGBT youth in New York city for the last decade. Before joining GLAAD, he was a mentor and teacher at the Hetrick-Martin Institute, an LGBT youth service organization. He ran the Comprehensive Risk Counseling and Service program, an intense intervention aimed at creating healthy relationships around sex and sexuality for homeless and out of home gay and transgender youth. He build workshops around self-esteem, intersectionality, and sex positivity as a means to grow self-awareness. He has spoken about LGBT issues at high schools across New York city and has been a guest lecturer at Lehmen College in the MSW program for the last 3 years discussing gender and sexuality with graduating social workers.
