Police Officer killed in line of duty

The 24-year-old Flagstaff Police Officer Tyler Stewart was shot from a range of approximately two feet by 28-year-old Robert William Smith while responding to a domestic violence case on December 28, 2014. When Stewart asked to pat the suspect down for any weapons, Smith reached for a gun he had in his pocket and began firing at Stewart at close range. Smith then walked away and fatally shot himself. Officer Tyler Stewart had been with the department for less than a year. He graduated from Boulder Creek High School in Anthem and Concordia College in California. He left behind his parents, three sisters and a girlfriend. Officer Tyler Stewart was buried on Friday, January 2, 2015 in Flagstaff.
