Thomas Behrends served in the Minnesota National Guard, ascending to the rank of Command Sergeant Major. In 2005, as the unit prepared for deployment to Iraq, Behrends assumed command responsibilities after then-Command Sergeant Major Tim Walz retired to pursue a political career.

Behrends has publicly criticized Governor Tim Walz’s military record, alleging that Walz’s retirement before deployment was an act of cowardice and a betrayal to their unit. He has referred to Walz as a “traitor” for retiring prior to their deployment to Iraq. ​

Beyond his military career, Behrends owns and operates Behrends Farms & Gravel, contributing to his local community in Brewster, Minnesota.
