Biography
Derrick M. Anderson (born August 4, 1984) is an American politician, lawyer, and military officer. On June 18, 2024, Anderson beat Cameron Hamilton in the 2024 Republican primary to become the Republican nominee for 2024 election in Virginia’s 7th congressional district. He narrowly lost in the general election to Democrat Eugene Vindman. On April 9, 2025, he was appointed to be the Acting Assistant Secretary of the Army (Manpower and Reserve Affairs) and was later nominated on June 3, 2025 to be the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict. He currently serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army National Guard as a Green Beret.
Anderson was born in Wheeling, West Virginia and raised in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a BA in political science. He also received a JD from Georgetown Law University.
