Before his 2022 defeat, Jones was described as a rising star on the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. He is an advocate for Medicare for All and the Green New Deal.

When first elected, he became one of the two first openly gay Black members of Congress in history. After the 2020 redistricting cycle, he sought reelection in 2022 in New York’s 10th congressional district losing the Democratic primary to attorney Dan Goldman, who went on to win the seat in the general election. In July 2023, Jones announced that he would again seek election, this time in the 17th district, in 2024.
