Biography

Tia Mitchell is a journalist in Washington, D.C., where she covers national government and politics for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution as the paper’s Washington Bureau Chief. Previously she spent two years as the AJC’s DeKalb County reporter, covering government and politics in the state’s 4th most populous county.

You can catch Tia as one of the co-hosts of the AJC’s “Politically Georgia” radio show and podcast. She is also a frequent commentator on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, News Nation, SiriusXM and other national outlets.

Tia’s current responsibilities include covering the Georgia congressional delegation, as well the impact that the policies and decision-making of the U.S. Congress, the White House and executive and judicial agencies in Washington have on Georgia.

Before joining the AJC in 2017, Tia spent her entire career working in Florida. While covering state government and politics for The Florida Times-Union, Tia was based in Tallahassee but focused on Northeast Florida issues and lawmakers. She also wrote a popular column in the Sunday “Reason” section that focused on analysis and insight on local, state and national politics.

Tia worked for the Tampa Bay Times newspaper from 2011 through 2014. During most of her tenure there, she was stationed in the Times/Miami Herald Tallahassee Bureau where she concentrated on health care and higher education coverage.

During her first stint at the Times-Union from 2002 through 2010, Tia was promoted through a variety of beats including “night cops,” K-12 education and, finally, the Jacksonville City Council/local politics.

Tia is a native of Louisville, Kentucky, and she earned a bachelor degree in journalism from Florida A&M University. However, she was identified as a strong writer at a very young age. (The photo above is of “All About Fish,” a non-fiction book she wrote in the 2nd grade that won the “Young Authors Award” out of all 2nd and 3rd graders at her school that year.)

Tia is a member of the Gridiron Club, D.C.’s oldest and most prestigious journalism organization. She is also vice president of the Washington Press Club Foundation. She is active with the National Association of Black Journalists where she serves as convention programming co-chair and immediate past chair of the Political Task Force. Tia is also a member of the Regional Reporters Association board. Previously she served on the board of the Florida Capitol Press Corps, the association of journalists who cover government and politics in Tallahassee. She completed two stints as its president, and you could catch her singing and dancing on stage each year at the annual Press Skits scholarship fundraiser.

She is also active in the community as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. And is a lifetime member of the FAMU National Alumni Association.
