Biography
Shelvia Dancy is a newspaper and television journalist who has published articles in The Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times. She has a law degree and speaks Japanese. She is also a “military brat” whose family lived in eastern North Carolina before moving to Japan.
As a newspaper reporter in D.C., she covered politics and published articles in The Washington Post and other newspapers nationwide. She has also covered a homicide investigation for “The Nancy Grace Show,” “Snapped” and The Discovery Channel. She has also reported for The News & Observer in Raleigh and The Post-Standard in Syracuse, N.Y.
She has a law degree from N.C. Central University School of Law. She competed on the law school’s trial teams and moot court board, placing in the top eight in a national moot court competition and placing in the top four in a national trial competition. She was on the team that ranked No. 2 in an American Association for Justice Regional Trial Team Competition. She also won a scholarship from the Susie Sharp Inn of Court, won first place in a 2L closing argument competition and second place in an opening statement competition.
She has a master’s degree in newspaper journalism (magna cum laude) from Syracuse University, which she attended on a full scholarship (the Newhouse Fellowship) given to just two journalism students each year. She earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and English literature (summa cum laude) from N.C. Central University, which she also attended on a full academic scholarship. At NCCU she was editor of the student newspaper, and twice won the university’s Outstanding Student Journalist award. She was also one of 17 students in the nation offered a reporting internship with The Associated Press. She also earned third place in the Duke University Annual Japanese Speech Contest.
She was honored with a “Forty Under 40” Outstanding Alumni Award from NCCU.
She has also worked as an adjunct journalism professor at NCCU, and as a journalist-in-residence at N.C. State University. She has volunteered at Duke University and Syracuse University, teaching English to students from other countries.
Dancy gained her first reporting internship in high school, winning a competition to work as a “teen reporter” for a local TV station, and also working at a radio station as co-host of a teen talk show. By 19, she was writing obituaries and covering news for a small newspaper in eastern North Carolina.
When she’s not in the newsroom, she enjoys reading/writing, running, traveling, painting, and volunteering.
