story Give ░░░░░░░░ a big round of ░░░░░░░░ Applause So this is ░░░░░░░░ here I just finished ░░░░░░░░ a tour of just ░░░░░░░░ little corner of this ░░░░░░░░ facility size of 28 ░░░░░░░░ fields Last year during ░░░░░░░░ busiest day of the ░░░░░░░░ rush customers around the ░░░░░░░░ ordered more than 300 ░░░░░░░░ from Amazon every second ░░░░░░░░ a lot of those ░░░░░░░░ through this building So ░░░░░░░░ is kind of like ░░░░░░░░ North Pole of the ░░░░░░░░ right here Applause Got ░░░░░░░░ bunch of good looking ░░░░░░░░ here Before we start ░░░░░░░░ want to recognize your ░░░░░░░░ manager Mike Thomas Applause ░░░░░░░░ tour guide and your ░░░░░░░░ president Dave Clark Applause ░░░░░░░░ ve got the Mayor ░░░░░░░░ Chattanooga Andy Berke Applause ░░░░░░░░ you ve got one ░░░░░░░░ the finest gentlemen I ░░░░░░░░ your Congressman Jim Cooper ░░░░░░░░ So thank you all ░░░░░░░░ being here So I ░░░░░░░░ come here today to ░░░░░░░░ a little more about ░░░░░░░░ I was discussing last ░░░░░░░░ and that s what ░░░░░░░░ need to do as ░░░░░░░░ country to secure a ░░░░░░░░ bargain for the middle ░░░░░░░░ a national strategy to ░░░░░░░░ sure that every single ░░░░░░░░ who s willing to ░░░░░░░░ hard in this country ░░░░░░░░ a chance to succeed ░░░░░░░░ the 21st century economy ░░░░░░░░ Now you heard from ░░░░░░░░ so you know because ░░░░░░░░ of you went through ░░░░░░░░ over the past four ░░░░░░░░ a half years we ░░░░░░░░ been fighting our way ░░░░░░░░ from the worst recession ░░░░░░░░ the Great Depression and ░░░░░░░░ cost millions of Americans ░░░░░░░░ jobs and their homes ░░░░░░░░ their savings And part ░░░░░░░░ what it did is ░░░░░░░░ laid bare the long ░░░░░░░░ erosion that s been ░░░░░░░░ when it comes to ░░░░░░░░ class security But because ░░░░░░░░ American people are resilient ░░░░░░░░ bounced back Together we ░░░░░░░░ righted the ship We ░░░░░░░░ on a broken health ░░░░░░░░ system We invested in ░░░░░░░░ American technologies to reverse ░░░░░░░░ addiction to foreign oil ░░░░░░░░ a tax code that ░░░░░░░░ become tilted too much ░░░░░░░░ favor of the wealthy ░░░░░░░░ the expense of working ░░░░░░░░ Saved the auto industry ░░░░░░░░ thanks to GM and ░░░░░░░░ UAW working together we ░░░░░░░░ bringing jobs back here ░░░░░░░░ America including 1 800 ░░░░░░░░ in Spring Hill Applause ░░░░░░░░ 800 workers in Spring ░░░░░░░░ are on the job ░░░░░░░░ where a plant was ░░░░░░░░ closed Today our businesses ░░░░░░░░ created 7 2 million ░░░░░░░░ jobs over the last ░░░░░░░░ months This year we ░░░░░░░░ off to our best ░░░░░░░░ sector jobs growth since ░░░░░░░░ We now sell more ░░░░░░░░ made in America to ░░░░░░░░ rest of the world ░░░░░░░░ ever before Applause We ░░░░░░░░ more renewable energy than ░░░░░░░░ We produce more natural ░░░░░░░░ than anybody else in ░░░░░░░░ world Applause Health care ░░░░░░░░ are growing at the ░░░░░░░░ rate in 50 years ░░░░░░░░ deficits are falling at ░░░░░░░░ fastest rate in 60 ░░░░░░░░ Applause So thanks to ░░░░░░░░ folks like you thanks ░░░░░░░░ the grit and resilience ░░░░░░░░ the American people we ░░░░░░░░ been able to clear ░░░░░░░░ some of the rubble ░░░░░░░░ the financial crisis We ░░░░░░░░ started to lay a ░░░░░░░░ foundation for a stronger ░░░░░░░░ durable America the kind ░░░░░░░░ economic growth that s ░░░░░░░░ based the foundation required ░░░░░░░░ make this century another ░░░░░░░░ century But as I ░░░░░░░░ last week and as ░░░░░░░░ middle class family will ░░░░░░░░ you we re not ░░░░░░░░ yet Even before the ░░░░░░░░ crisis hit we were ░░░░░░░░ through a decade where ░░░░░░░░ few at the top ░░░░░░░░ doing better and better ░░░░░░░░ most families were working ░░░░░░░░ and harder just to ░░░░░░░░ by And reversing that ░░░░░░░░ should be Washington s ░░░░░░░░ priority Applause It s ░░░░░░░░ highest priority But so ░░░░░░░░ for most of this ░░░░░░░░ we ve seen an ░░░░░░░░ parade of distractions and ░░░░░░░░ posturing and phony scandals ░░░░░░░░ we keep on shifting ░░░░░░░░ way shifting our attention ░░░░░░░░ from what we should ░░░░░░░░ focused on which is ░░░░░░░░ do we strengthen the ░░░░░░░░ class and grow the ░░░░░░░░ for everybody Applause And ░░░░░░░░ Washington heads towards yet ░░░░░░░░ budget debate the stakes ░░░░░░░░ t be higher And ░░░░░░░░ s why I m ░░░░░░░░ cities and towns like ░░░░░░░░ to lay out my ░░░░░░░░ for how we can ░░░░░░░░ on the cornerstone of ░░░░░░░░ it means to be ░░░░░░░░ class in America A ░░░░░░░░ job with good wages ░░░░░░░░ good education Applause A ░░░░░░░░ to call your own ░░░░░░░░ Affordable health care that ░░░░░░░░ there for you when ░░░░░░░░ get sick Applause A ░░░░░░░░ retirement even if you ░░░░░░░░ not rich Applause More ░░░░░░░░ for folks to earn ░░░░░░░░ way into the middle ░░░░░░░░ as long as they ░░░░░░░░ willing to work for ░░░░░░░░ And most importantly the ░░░░░░░░ to pass on a ░░░░░░░░ future for our kids ░░░░░░░░ So I m doing ░░░░░░░░ series of speeches over ░░░░░░░░ next several weeks but ░░░░░░░░ came to Chattanooga today ░░░░░░░░ talk about the first ░░░░░░░░ most important cornerstone of ░░░░░░░░ class security and that ░░░░░░░░ a good job in ░░░░░░░░ durable growing industry Applause ░░░░░░░░ s hard to get ░░░░░░░░ other stuff going if ░░░░░░░░ don t have a ░░░░░░░░ job And the truth ░░░░░░░░ everything I m going ░░░░░░░░ be talking about over ░░░░░░░░ next several weeks really ░░░░░░░░ about jobs Because preparing ░░░░░░░░ children and our workers ░░░░░░░░ the global competition they ░░░░░░░░ face that s about ░░░░░░░░ A housing finance system ░░░░░░░░ makes it easier and ░░░░░░░░ to buy and build ░░░░░░░░ homes that s about ░░░░░░░░ in the construction industry ░░░░░░░░ care that frees you ░░░░░░░░ the fear of losing ░░░░░░░░ after you ve worked ░░░░░░░░ hard and then having ░░░░░░░░ freedom to maybe start ░░░░░░░░ own business because you ░░░░░░░░ you ll be able ░░░░░░░░ get health care that ░░░░░░░░ about jobs And obviously ░░░░░░░░ benefits speak to the ░░░░░░░░ of our jobs And ░░░░░░░░ me say this it ░░░░░░░░ something everybody here understands ░░░░░░░░ are about more than ░░░░░░░░ paying the bills Jobs ░░░░░░░░ about more than just ░░░░░░░░ We ve never just ░░░░░░░░ having a job as ░░░░░░░░ a paycheck here in ░░░░░░░░ A job is a ░░░░░░░░ of pride is a ░░░░░░░░ of dignity It s ░░░░░░░░ way you look after ░░░░░░░░ family Applause It s ░░░░░░░░ that you re doing ░░░░░░░░ right things and meeting ░░░░░░░░ responsibilities and contributing to ░░░░░░░░ fabric of your community ░░░░░░░░ helping to build the ░░░░░░░░ That s what a ░░░░░░░░ is all about It ░░░░░░░░ not just about a ░░░░░░░░ It s not just ░░░░░░░░ paying the bills It ░░░░░░░░ also about knowing that ░░░░░░░░ you re doing is ░░░░░░░░ that it counts So ░░░░░░░░ should be doing everything ░░░░░░░░ can as a country ░░░░░░░░ create more good jobs ░░░░░░░░ pay good wages Period ░░░░░░░░ Now here s the ░░░░░░░░ Chattanooga the problem is ░░░░░░░░ that we don t ░░░░░░░░ ideas about how we ░░░░░░░░ create even more jobs ░░░░░░░░ ve got a lot ░░░░░░░░ ideas out there There ░░░░░░░░ plenty of independent economists ░░░░░░░░ of business owners people ░░░░░░░░ both parties agree on ░░░░░░░░ of the ingredients that ░░░░░░░░ need for creating good ░░░░░░░░ And you ve heard ░░░░░░░░ debated again and again ░░░░░░░░ these past few years ░░░░░░░░ proposed a lot of ░░░░░░░░ ideas myself Just two ░░░░░░░░ ago I announced the ░░░░░░░░ Jobs Act full of ░░░░░░░░ that every independent economist ░░░░░░░░ would create more jobs ░░░░░░░░ were passed by Congress ░░░░░░░░ I got to admit ░░░░░░░░ of them weren t ░░░░░░░░ there were ideas that ░░░░░░░░ had Republican support and ░░░░░░░░ some reason suddenly Republicans ░░░░░░░░ t want to support ░░░░░░░░ anymore Putting people back ░░░░░░░░ work rebuilding America s ░░░░░░░░ Equipping our kids and ░░░░░░░░ workers with the best ░░░░░░░░ Leading the world in ░░░░░░░░ research that helps to ░░░░░░░░ the way for new ░░░░░░░░ in new industries Accelerating ░░░░░░░░ clean energy and natural ░░░░░░░░ revolutions Fixing a broken ░░░░░░░░ system so that American ░░░░░░░░ aren t undercut undermined ░░░░░░░░ some businesses are unscrupulous ░░░░░░░░ hiring folks and not ░░░░░░░░ them decent wages Applause ░░░░░░░░ economists say immigration reform ░░░░░░░░ boost our economy by ░░░░░░░░ than a trillion dollars ░░░░░░░░ we ve got ideas ░░░░░░░░ there we know can ░░░░░░░░ And if we don ░░░░░░░░ make these investments if ░░░░░░░░ don t make these ░░░░░░░░ then we might as ░░░░░░░░ be waving the white ░░░░░░░░ to the rest of ░░░░░░░░ world because they re ░░░░░░░░ forward They re not ░░░░░░░░ down China Germany India ░░░░░░░░ re going And we ░░░░░░░░ t just sit by ░░░░░░░░ do nothing Doing nothing ░░░░░░░░ t help the middle ░░░░░░░░ Applause So today I ░░░░░░░░ here to offer a ░░░░░░░░ that might help break ░░░░░░░░ some of the political ░░░░░░░░ in Washington and try ░░░░░░░░ get Congress to start ░░░░░░░░ on some of these ░░░░░░░░ ideas But let me ░░░░░░░░ outline some of the ░░░░░░░░ I think we need ░░░░░░░░ focus on if we ░░░░░░░░ to create good jobs ░░░░░░░░ good wages in durable ░░░░░░░░ areas that will fuel ░░░░░░░░ future growth Number one ░░░░░░░░ in American manufacturing Applause ░░░░░░░░ the past four years ░░░░░░░░ the first time since ░░░░░░░░ 1990s the number of ░░░░░░░░ jobs in America hasn ░░░░░░░░ gone down it s ░░░░░░░░ gone up Applause So ░░░░░░░░ trend lines are good ░░░░░░░░ we ve got to ░░░░░░░░ on that progress I ░░░░░░░░ to offer new incentives ░░░░░░░░ manufacturers not to ship ░░░░░░░░ overseas but to bring ░░░░░░░░ back here to America ░░░░░░░░ I want new tax ░░░░░░░░ so communities hit hardest ░░░░░░░░ plant closures can attract ░░░░░░░░ investment Applause In my ░░░░░░░░ of the Union address ░░░░░░░░ asked Congress to build ░░░░░░░░ a successful pilot program ░░░░░░░░ ve set up We ░░░░░░░░ to create not just ░░░░░░░░ manufacturing innovation institutes that ░░░░░░░░ businesses and universities and ░░░░░░░░ agencies to help communities ░░░░░░░░ behind by global competition ░░░░░░░░ become centers of high ░░░░░░░░ jobs Today I m ░░░░░░░░ Congress to build on ░░░░░░░░ bipartisan support and triple ░░░░░░░░ number from 15 to ░░░░░░░░ these hubs where we ░░░░░░░░ getting businesses universities communities ░░░░░░░░ to work together to ░░░░░░░░ centers of high tech ░░░░░░░░ all throughout the United ░░░░░░░░ that allow us to ░░░░░░░░ at the forefront of ░░░░░░░░ next revolution of manufacturing ░░░░░░░░ want it made here ░░░░░░░░ the United States of ░░░░░░░░ I don t want ░░░░░░░░ happening overseas Applause Number ░░░░░░░░ I talked about this ░░░░░░░░ week jobs rebuilding our ░░░░░░░░ I look at this ░░░░░░░░ facility and you guys ░░░░░░░░ don t miss a ░░░░░░░░ I mean you ve ░░░░░░░░ these packages coming out ░░░░░░░░ ve got dog food ░░░░░░░░ Kindles and beard trimmers ░░░░░░░░ I mean there s ░░░░░░░░ kinds of stuff around ░░░░░░░░ But once it s ░░░░░░░░ up it s got ░░░░░░░░ get to the customer ░░░░░░░░ how quickly and how ░░░░░░░░ it gets to the ░░░░░░░░ depends on do we ░░░░░░░░ good roads do we ░░░░░░░░ good bridges do we ░░░░░░░░ state of the art ░░░░░░░░ We ve got about ░░░░░░░░ trillion of deferred maintenance ░░░░░░░░ in this country So ░░░░░░░░ s put more construction ░░░░░░░░ back on the job ░░░░░░░░ the work America needs ░░░░░░░░ Applause These are vital ░░░░░░░░ that Amazon needs businesses ░░░░░░░░ across the country need ░░░░░░░░ widening Route 27 here ░░░░░░░░ Chattanooga applause deepening the ░░░░░░░░ Port that I visited ░░░░░░░░ week These are projects ░░░░░░░░ to our national pride ░░░░░░░░ re going to be ░░░░░░░░ ground this week at ░░░░░░░░ St Louis Arch Congress ░░░░░░░░ pass what I ve ░░░░░░░░ my Fix It First ░░░░░░░░ to put people to ░░░░░░░░ immediately on our most ░░░░░░░░ repairs like the 100 ░░░░░░░░ bridges that are old ░░░░░░░░ to qualify for Medicare ░░░░░░░░ will create good middle ░░░░░░░░ jobs right now Applause ░░░░░░░░ we should partner with ░░░░░░░░ private sector to upgrade ░░░░░░░░ businesses like Amazon need ░░░░░░░░ We should have a ░░░░░░░░ air traffic control system ░░░░░░░░ keep planes running on ░░░░░░░░ We should have modern ░░░░░░░░ grids and pipelines to ░░░░░░░░ a storm We should ░░░░░░░░ modern schools to prepare ░░░░░░░░ kids for the jobs ░░░░░░░░ tomorrow Applause Number three ░░░░░░░░ need to keep creating ░░░░░░░░ jobs in energy in ░░░░░░░░ and solar and natural ░░░░░░░░ Those new energy sources ░░░░░░░░ reducing energy costs They ░░░░░░░░ reducing dangerous carbon pollution ░░░░░░░░ re reducing our dependence ░░░░░░░░ foreign oil So now ░░░░░░░░ not the time to ░░░░░░░░ investments in American technology ░░░░░░░░ is the time to ░░░░░░░░ down on renewable energy ░░░░░░░░ biofuels and electric vehicles ░░░░░░░░ to put money into ░░░░░░░░ research that will shift ░░░░░░░░ cars and trucks off ░░░░░░░░ for good Applause And ░░░░░░░░ me tell you cheaper ░░░░░░░░ of natural gas is ░░░░░░░░ huge boost to our ░░░░░░░░ here in America so ░░░░░░░░ should develop it even ░░░░░░░░ We ve got to ░░░░░░░░ it in a way ░░░░░░░░ protects our air and ░░░░░░░░ water for our children ░░░░░░░░ future generations But we ░░░░░░░░ do that We ve ░░░░░░░░ the technology to do ░░░░░░░░ Number four we ve ░░░░░░░░ to export more We ░░░░░░░░ to send American goods ░░░░░░░░ around the world Applause ░░░░░░░░ year ago I signed ░░░░░░░░ new trade agreement with ░░░░░░░░ because they were selling ░░░░░░░░ lot of Hyundais here ░░░░░░░░ we weren t selling ░░░░░░░░ lot of GM cars ░░░░░░░░ there Since we signed ░░░░░░░░ deal our Big Three ░░░░░░░░ are selling 18 percent ░░░░░░░░ cars in Korea than ░░░░░░░░ were Applause So now ░░░░░░░░ ve got to help ░░░░░░░░ of our businesses do ░░░░░░░░ same thing I m ░░░░░░░░ Congress for the authority ░░░░░░░░ negotiate the best trade ░░░░░░░░ possible for our workers ░░░░░░░░ combine it with robust ░░░░░░░░ and assistance measures to ░░░░░░░░ sure our workers have ░░░░░░░░ support and the skills ░░░░░░░░ need for this new ░░░░░░░░ competition And we re ░░░░░░░░ to have to sharpen ░░░░░░░░ competitive edge in the ░░░░░░░░ job marketplace Two years ░░░░░░░░ we created something called ░░░░░░░░ This is a coordinated ░░░░░░░░ to attract foreign companies ░░░░░░░░ to invest and create ░░░░░░░░ here in the United ░░░░░░░░ And today I m ░░░░░░░░ my Cabinet to expand ░░░░░░░░ efforts And this October ░░░░░░░░ m going to bring ░░░░░░░░ leaders from around the ░░░░░░░░ and I m going ░░░░░░░░ connect them to state ░░░░░░░░ and local leaders like ░░░░░░░░ mayor who are ready ░░░░░░░░ prove there s no ░░░░░░░░ place to do business ░░░░░░░░ right here in the ░░░░░░░░ States of America Applause ░░░░░░░░ five let s do ░░░░░░░░ to help the more ░░░░░░░░ 4 million long term ░░░░░░░░ Americans that are out ░░░░░░░░ Applause One of the ░░░░░░░░ is a lot of ░░░░░░░░ they lose their jobs ░░░░░░░░ this really bad recession ░░░░░░░░ no fault of their ░░░░░░░░ They ve got what ░░░░░░░░ takes to fill that ░░░░░░░░ opening but because they ░░░░░░░░ been out of work ░░░░░░░░ long employers won t ░░░░░░░░ give their application a ░░░░░░░░ look Applause So I ░░░░░░░░ challenging CEOs to do ░░░░░░░░ to get these Americans ░░░░░░░░ on their feet And ░░░░░░░░ m going to bring ░░░░░░░░ the CEOs and companies ░░░░░░░░ are putting in place ░░░░░░░░ of the best practices ░░░░░░░░ recruiting and training and ░░░░░░░░ workers who have been ░░░░░░░░ of work for a ░░░░░░░░ time but want the ░░░░░░░░ to show that they ░░░░░░░░ ready to go back ░░░░░░░░ work Applause And at ░░░░░░░░ same time I m ░░░░░░░░ on our businesses to ░░░░░░░░ more for their workers ░░░░░░░░ Amazon is a great ░░░░░░░░ of what s possible ░░░░░░░░ you re doing here ░░░░░░░░ Amazon with your Career ░░░░░░░░ Program pays 95 percent ░░░░░░░░ the tuition for employees ░░░░░░░░ want to earn skills ░░░░░░░░ fields with high demand ░░░░░░░░ just by the way ░░░░░░░░ here at Amazon but ░░░░░░░░ anywhere computer aided design ░░░░░░░░ nursing I talked to ░░░░░░░░ Bezos yesterday and he ░░░░░░░░ so proud of the ░░░░░░░░ that he wants to ░░░░░░░░ every employee at Amazon ░░░░░░░░ upgrade their skills and ░░░░░░░░ And if they ve ░░░░░░░░ a dream they want ░░░░░░░░ pursue Amazon wants to ░░░░░░░░ them pursue it Applause ░░░░░░░░ s the kind of ░░░░░░░░ that we need from ░░░░░░░░ s businesses Offering training ░░░░░░░░ health care retirement plans ░░░░░░░░ better wages that s ░░░░░░░░ just the right thing ░░░░░░░░ do it s actually ░░░░░░░░ for your bottom line ░░░░░░░░ recent study shows that ░░░░░░░░ a company makes the ░░░░░░░░ of the 100 Best ░░░░░░░░ to Work for in ░░░░░░░░ its share price outperforms ░░░░░░░░ competitors because the stock ░░░░░░░░ and investors they know ░░░░░░░░ a company has employees ░░░░░░░░ are motivated and happy ░░░░░░░░ business is more likely ░░░░░░░░ succeed Applause That business ░░░░░░░░ more likely to succeed ░░░░░░░░ because nobody who works ░░░░░░░░ time in America should ░░░░░░░░ to live in poverty ░░░░░░░░ m going to keep ░░░░░░░░ making the case and ░░░░░░░░ for the fact that ░░░░░░░░ need to raise our ░░░░░░░░ wage because right now ░░░░░░░░ s in lower terms ░░░░░░░░ it was when Ronald ░░░░░░░░ took office Applause When ░░░░░░░░ have more money in ░░░░░░░░ pockets that s good ░░░░░░░░ Amazon it means your ░░░░░░░░ have a little more ░░░░░░░░ They can order a ░░░░░░░░ more of that protein ░░░░░░░░ Laughter I noticed a ░░░░░░░░ of folks were ordering ░░░░░░░░ power Everybody is trying ░░░░░░░░ get bulked up Laughter ░░░░░░░░ here s those are ░░░░░░░░ of the ideas that ░░░░░░░░ re out there we ░░░░░░░░ promoting We re not ░░░░░░░░ for ideas we re ░░░░░░░░ lacking action especially out ░░░░░░░░ Washington Applause For most ░░░░░░░░ the past two years ░░░░░░░░ has just taken its ░░░░░░░░ off the ball when ░░░░░░░░ comes to the middle ░░░░░░░░ And I ll tell ░░░░░░░░ look there are a ░░░░░░░░ number of the good ░░░░░░░░ is there are a ░░░░░░░░ number of Republican senators ░░░░░░░░ are trying to work ░░░░░░░░ Democrats to get some ░░░░░░░░ done Applause That s ░░░░░░░░ news The bad news ░░░░░░░░ that rather than keep ░░░░░░░░ focus on what should ░░░░░░░░ our priority which is ░░░░░░░░ our economy and creating ░░░░░░░░ middle class jobs we ░░░░░░░░ seen a certain faction ░░░░░░░░ Republicans in Congress hurt ░░░░░░░░ fragile recovery by saying ░░░░░░░░ they wouldn t pay ░░░░░░░░ very bills that Congress ░░░░░░░░ up in the first ░░░░░░░░ threatening to shut down ░░░░░░░░ people s government if ░░░░░░░░ can t get rid ░░░░░░░░ ObamaCare Instead of reducing ░░░░░░░░ deficits with a scalpel ░░░░░░░░ get rid of programs ░░░░░░░░ don t need but ░░░░░░░░ vital investments that we ░░░░░░░░ this same group has ░░░░░░░░ in place this meat ░░░░░░░░ called the sequester that ░░░░░░░░ just slashing all kinds ░░░░░░░░ important investments in education ░░░░░░░░ research and our military ░░░░░░░░ the things that are ░░░░░░░░ to make this country ░░░░░░░░ magnet for good middle ░░░░░░░░ jobs those things are ░░░░░░░░ cut And these moves ░░░░░░░░ t just hurt our ░░░░░░░░ in the long term ░░░░░░░░ hurt our middle class ░░░░░░░░ now The independent Congressional ░░░░░░░░ Office estimates that the ░░░░░░░░ that are being made ░░░░░░░░ now in Washington will ░░░░░░░░ our economy 750 000 ░░░░░░░░ this year 900 000 ░░░░░░░░ jobs next year And ░░░░░░░░ lot of the jobs ░░░░░░░░ risk are at small ░░░░░░░░ that contract with our ░░░░░░░░ or our federal agencies ░░░░░░░░ the past four years ░░░░░░░░ 700 000 workers at ░░░░░░░░ federal state and local ░░░░░░░░ of government have lost ░░░░░░░░ jobs These are cops ░░░░░░░░ firefighters and about half ░░░░░░░░ them are people who ░░░░░░░░ in our schools Those ░░░░░░░░ real jobs It doesn ░░░░░░░░ help a company like ░░░░░░░░ when a teacher or ░░░░░░░░ cop or a firefighter ░░░░░░░░ their job They don ░░░░░░░░ have money to place ░░░░░░░░ order That s hundreds ░░░░░░░░ thousands of customers who ░░░░░░░░ less money to spend ░░░░░░░░ those layoffs had not ░░░░░░░░ if public sector employees ░░░░░░░░ like they did in ░░░░░░░░ past two recessions the ░░░░░░░░ rate would be 6 ░░░░░░░░ percent instead of 7 ░░░░░░░░ percent Our economy would ░░░░░░░░ much better off and ░░░░░░░░ deficit would still be ░░░░░░░░ down because we d ░░░░░░░░ getting more tax revenue ░░░░░░░░ the point is if ░░░░░░░░ spent as much time ░░░░░░░░ energy these past two ░░░░░░░░ figuring out how to ░░░░░░░░ our economy and grow ░░░░░░░░ middle class as it ░░░░░░░░ spent manufacturing crises in ░░░░░░░░ of a cut at ░░░░░░░░ costs approach to deficits ░░░░░░░░ d be much better ░░░░░░░░ We d be much ░░░░░░░░ off Applause And it ░░░░░░░░ not like we don ░░░░░░░░ have to cut our ░░░░░░░░ As a share of ░░░░░░░░ economy we ve cut ░░░░░░░░ deficits by nearly half ░░░░░░░░ I took office Half ░░░░░░░░ they re projected to ░░░░░░░░ down even further but ░░░░░░░░ s a right way ░░░░░░░░ do it and a ░░░░░░░░ way to do it ░░░░░░░░ we should do it ░░░░░░░░ a way that actually ░░░░░░░░ middle class families instead ░░░░░░░░ hurts them Applause I ░░░░░░░░ told Republicans that if ░░░░░░░░ re serious about a ░░░░░░░░ long term fiscal plan ░░░░░░░░ replaces harmful budget cuts ░░░░░░░░ would get serious about ░░░░░░░░ long term plan that ░░░░░░░░ those 900 000 jobs ░░░░░░░░ being lost that helps ░░░░░░░░ the economy that helps ░░░░░░░░ middle class I am ░░░░░░░░ to go But we ░░░░░░░░ t lose sight of ░░░░░░░░ North Star We can ░░░░░░░░ allow an impasse over ░░░░░░░░ term fiscal challenges to ░░░░░░░░ us from what the ░░░░░░░░ class needs right now ░░░░░░░░ here s the bottom ░░░░░░░░ If folks in Washington ░░░░░░░░ want a grand bargain ░░░░░░░░ about a grand bargain ░░░░░░░░ middle class jobs Applause ░░░░░░░░ about a grand bargain ░░░░░░░░ middle class jobs I ░░░░░░░░ t want to go ░░░░░░░░ the same old arguments ░░░░░░░░ I propose an idea ░░░░░░░░ the Republicans just say ░░░░░░░░ because it s my ░░░░░░░░ Applause So I m ░░░░░░░░ to try offering something ░░░░░░░░ serious people in both ░░░░░░░░ should be able to ░░░░░░░░ a deal that simplifies ░░░░░░░░ tax code for our ░░░░░░░░ and creates good jobs ░░░░░░░░ good wages for middle ░░░░░░░░ folks who work at ░░░░░░░░ businesses Right now everybody ░░░░░░░░ this our tax code ░░░░░░░░ so riddled with loopholes ░░░░░░░░ special interest tax breaks ░░░░░░░░ a lot of companies ░░░░░░░░ are doing the right ░░░░░░░░ and investing in America ░░░░░░░░ 35 percent in their ░░░░░░░░ corporations who have got ░░░░░░░░ accountants and stash their ░░░░░░░░ overseas they pay little ░░░░░░░░ nothing in taxes That ░░░░░░░░ not fair and it ░░░░░░░░ not good for the ░░░░░░░░ here So I m ░░░░░░░░ to simplify our tax ░░░░░░░░ closes those loopholes ends ░░░░░░░░ to ship jobs overseas ░░░░░░░░ the rate for businesses ░░░░░░░░ are creating jobs right ░░░░░░░░ in America provides tax ░░░░░░░░ for manufacturers that bring ░░░░░░░░ home to the United ░░░░░░░░ Let s simplify taxes ░░░░░░░░ small business owners give ░░░░░░░░ incentives to invest so ░░░░░░░░ can spend less time ░░░░░░░░ out complicated forms more ░░░░░░░░ expanding and hiring I ░░░░░░░░ willing to do all ░░░░░░░░ that should help businesses ░░░░░░░░ help them grow But ░░░░░░░░ we re going to ░░░░░░░░ businesses a better deal ░░░░░░░░ we re also going ░░░░░░░░ have to give workers ░░░░░░░░ better deal too Applause ░░░░░░░░ want to use some ░░░░░░░░ the money that we ░░░░░░░░ by closing these loopholes ░░░░░░░░ create more good construction ░░░░░░░░ with infrastructure initiatives that ░░░░░░░░ already talked about We ░░░░░░░░ build a broader network ░░░░░░░░ high tech manufacturing hubs ░░░░░░░░ leaders from both parties ░░░░░░░░ support We can help ░░░░░░░░ community colleges arm our ░░░░░░░░ with the skills that ░░░░░░░░ global economy demands All ░░░░░░░░ things would benefit the ░░░░░░░░ class right now and ░░░░░░░░ our economy in the ░░░░░░░░ to come So again ░░░░░░░░ s the bottom line ░░░░░░░░ m willing to work ░░░░░░░░ Republicans on reforming our ░░░░░░░░ tax code as long ░░░░░░░░ we use the money ░░░░░░░░ transitioning to a simpler ░░░░░░░░ system for a significant ░░░░░░░░ in creating middle class ░░░░░░░░ That s the deal ░░░░░░░░ And I m just ░░░░░░░░ to keep on throwing ░░░░░░░░ out there to see ░░░░░░░░ something takes Laughter I ░░░░░░░░ going to lay out ░░░░░░░░ ideas to give the ░░░░░░░░ class a better shot ░░░░░░░░ now it s time ░░░░░░░░ Republicans to lay out ░░░░░░░░ ideas If they ve ░░░░░░░░ a better plan to ░░░░░░░░ back more manufacturing jobs ░░░░░░░░ to Tennessee and around ░░░░░░░░ country then let them ░░░░░░░░ let me know I ░░░░░░░░ to hear them If ░░░░░░░░ ve got a better ░░░░░░░░ to create jobs rebuilding ░░░░░░░░ infrastructure or to help ░░░░░░░░ earn the high tech ░░░░░░░░ that they need then ░░░░░░░░ should offer up these ░░░░░░░░ But I ve got ░░░░░░░░ tell you just gutting ░░░░░░░░ environmental protection that s ░░░░░░░░ a jobs plan Gutting ░░░░░░░░ in education that s ░░░░░░░░ a jobs plan They ░░░░░░░░ on talking about this ░░░░░░░░ oil pipeline coming down ░░░░░░░░ Canada that s estimated ░░░░░░░░ create about 50 permanent ░░░░░░░░ that s not a ░░░░░░░░ plan Wasting the country ░░░░░░░░ time by taking something ░░░░░░░░ 40 meaningless votes to ░░░░░░░░ ObamaCare is not a ░░░░░░░░ plan That s not ░░░░░░░░ jobs plan Applause So ░░░░░░░░ s get serious Look ░░░░░░░░ want to tell everybody ░░░░░░░░ the truth And you ░░░░░░░░ look I know that ░░░░░░░░ politics for Obama aren ░░░░░░░░ always great in Tennessee ░░░░░░░░ understand that But I ░░░░░░░░ everybody to just hear ░░░░░░░░ honest truth I ve ░░░░░░░░ my last campaign so ░░░░░░░░ don t need to ░░░░░░░░ Applause And here s ░░░░░░░░ truth there are no ░░░░░░░░ that create jobs There ░░░░░░░░ no simple tricks to ░░░░░░░░ the economy Growing the ░░░░░░░░ making sure that the ░░░░░░░░ class is strong is ░░░░░░░░ getting in shape You ░░░░░░░░ t just go on ░░░░░░░░ muffin and doughnut diet ░░░░░░░░ the latest fad and ░░░░░░░░ weight You ve got ░░░░░░░░ work out and you ░░░░░░░░ got to eat better ░░░░░░░░ the same is true ░░░░░░░░ our economy The same ░░░░░░░░ true for helping the ░░░░░░░░ class We ve got ░░░░░░░░ have a serious steady ░░░░░░░░ term American strategy to ░░░░░░░░ the long term erosion ░░░░░░░░ middle class security and ░░░░░░░░ everybody a fair shot ░░░░░░░░ And we know what ░░░░░░░░ have to do It ░░░░░░░░ education It involves infrastructure ░░░░░░░░ involves research It involves ░░░░░░░░ energy policy And we ░░░░░░░░ have to stay at ░░░░░░░░ more good jobs that ░░░░░░░░ decent wages a better ░░░░░░░░ for the middle class ░░░░░░░░ economy that grows from ░░░░░░░░ middle out That s ░░░░░░░░ to be our focus ░░░░░░░░ can t be getting ░░░░░░░░ a whole bunch of ░░░░░░░░ and pretend like you ░░░░░░░░ back ObamaCare and suddenly ░░░░░░░░ these jobs are going ░░░░░░░░ be created because the ░░░░░░░░ class was struggling before ░░░░░░░░ came into office Applause ░░░░░░░░ middle class was losing ░░░░░░░░ before I came into ░░░░░░░░ Applause Jobs were getting ░░░░░░░░ overseas before ObamaCare was ░░░░░░░░ place So we ve ░░░░░░░░ to be honest We ░░░░░░░░ got to be honest ░░░░░░░░ the challenges we face ░░░░░░░░ also the opportunities that ░░░░░░░░ out there And that ░░░░░░░░ what I m going ░░░░░░░░ be focused on not ░░░░░░░░ for the next few ░░░░░░░░ I m going to ░░░░░░░░ focused for every one ░░░░░░░░ the 1 270 days ░░░░░░░░ ve got left in ░░░░░░░░ presidency on how to ░░░░░░░░ sure that we ve ░░░░░░░░ more opportunity and more
