director do ░░░░░░░░ guys think that Donald ░░░░░░░░ is going to debate ░░░░░░░░ next democratic and should ░░░░░░░░ Chris you know I ░░░░░░░░ t have any insight ░░░░░░░░ what the Trump campaign ░░░░░░░░ do in this situation ░░░░░░░░ I would be shocked ░░░░░░░░ he did not I ░░░░░░░░ Donald Trump what s ░░░░░░░░ Trump in 2016 was ░░░░░░░░ surprisingly agile debater and ░░░░░░░░ never went in and ░░░░░░░░ really knocked anybody off ░░░░░░░░ stage if you will ░░░░░░░░ use a metaphorically of ░░░░░░░░ although he and Bush ░░░░░░░░ have come pretty pretty ░░░░░░░░ figuratively but having said ░░░░░░░░ I will say having ░░░░░░░░ for Ted Cruz who ░░░░░░░░ a former national champion ░░░░░░░░ runner up on world ░░░░░░░░ debater we really didn ░░░░░░░░ expect Trump to be ░░░░░░░░ good as he was ░░░░░░░░ you know that he ░░░░░░░░ a fighter he s ░░░░░░░░ who doesn t shy ░░░░░░░░ from a head to ░░░░░░░░ battle with somebody so ░░░░░░░░ think that he would ░░░░░░░░ the chance to debate ░░░░░░░░ Joe Biden ER or ░░░░░░░░ Warren I would be ░░░░░░░░ if he did anything ░░░░░░░░ than go then then ░░░░░░░░ jumped up on that ░░░░░░░░ Robin what do you ░░░░░░░░ it depends Matthew on ░░░░░░░░ the nominee is I ░░░░░░░░ say that strategically he ░░░░░░░░ it to be Joe ░░░░░░░░ and if the nominee ░░░░░░░░ t Fat Joe Biden ░░░░░░░░ absolutely should debate him ░░░░░░░░ would because he could ░░░░░░░░ get him off of ░░░░░░░░ game and get him ░░░░░░░░ stumble and make a ░░░░░░░░ of these infamous gaps ░░░░░░░░ he makes almost on ░░░░░░░░ daily so that would ░░░░░░░░ a good strategic move ░░░░░░░░ him now if that ░░░░░░░░ is Elizabeth Warren I ░░░░░░░░ t know she s ░░░░░░░░ much more quick on ░░░░░░░░ heels she s a ░░░░░░░░ I think that his ░░░░░░░░ move strategically and what ░░░░░░░░ would ultimately do would ░░░░░░░░ to debate her and ░░░░░░░░ that he s just ░░░░░░░░ hold rallies instead and ░░░░░░░░ his message out to ░░░░░░░░ American public which would ░░░░░░░░ a good message for ░░░░░░░░ base just to say ░░░░░░░░ he s just not ░░░░░░░░ her time but ultimately ░░░░░░░░ she were the nominee ░░░░░░░░ do not think that ░░░░░░░░ will debate her do ░░░░░░░░ guys think that that ░░░░░░░░ Biden s age which ░░░░░░░░ lot of people talk ░░░░░░░░ his energy and and ░░░░░░░░ gaffes that we re ░░░░░░░░ of which some people ░░░░░░░░ about that that being ░░░░░░░░ of a lack of ░░░░░░░░ acuity is that all ░░░░░░░░ game in the 2020 ░░░░░░░░ and I mean Trump ░░░░░░░░ refers to him as ░░░░░░░░ Joe Chris yeah there ░░░░░░░░ not a big age ░░░░░░░░ between the two of ░░░░░░░░ but let me it ░░░░░░░░ different between a primary ░░░░░░░░ a general election and ░░░░░░░░ would say this either ░░░░░░░░ I think what went ░░░░░░░░ in the Democrat debate ░░░░░░░░ Ulen Castro what he ░░░░░░░░ was off was completely ░░░░░░░░ the table and that ░░░░░░░░ not have occurred and ░░░░░░░░ think Castro we pay ░░░░░░░░ price for that but ░░░░░░░░ will say I mean ░░░░░░░░ most recent attack and ░░░░░░░░ m sure you didn ░░░░░░░░ mean his attack was ░░░░░░░░ Jimmy Carter who said ░░░░░░░░ could not have been ░░░░░░░░ at the age of ░░░░░░░░ that it was too ░░░░░░░░ of a lift and ░░░░░░░░ was back in the ░░░░░░░░ so you can imagine ░░░░░░░░ it s like today ░░░░░░░░ I don t think ░░░░░░░░ does does Biden any ░░░░░░░░ so I is it ░░░░░░░░ s going to be ░░░░░░░░ issue that is debated ░░░░░░░░ mean it was debated ░░░░░░░░ Reagan was running it ░░░░░░░░ debated when a Trump ░░░░░░░░ the first time I ░░░░░░░░ I don t there ░░░░░░░░ any question it s ░░░░░░░░ be on the table ░░░░░░░░ is it fair I ░░░░░░░░ it s fair in ░░░░░░░░ sense that it deals ░░░░░░░░ mental acuity and as ░░░░░░░░ salud I mean Joe ░░░░░░░░ is kind of a ░░░░░░░░ is not mental is ░░░░░░░░ gaffe machine I mean ░░░░░░░░ about making sure the ░░░░░░░░ player is is running ░░░░░░░░ your kids it s ░░░░░░░░ go I mean you ░░░░░░░░ more people googling Reppert ░░░░░░░░ player that night then ░░░░░░░░ in the last decade ░░░░░░░░ it s just it ░░░░░░░░ it s you can ░░░░░░░░ count on whenever Biden ░░░░░░░░ the mic they do ░░░░░░░░ s gonna be a ░░░░░░░░ pop moment and something ░░░░░░░░ it s gonna come ░░░░░░░░ of his mouth that ░░░░░░░░ re gonna have to ░░░░░░░░ and look up and ░░░░░░░░ back later and I ░░░░░░░░ only imagine what his ░░░░░░░░ must feel like every ░░░░░░░░ he talks me there ░░░░░░░░ probably just chewing away ░░░░░░░░ their nails hoping they ░░░░░░░░ t do something else ░░░░░░░░ s gonna make them ░░░░░░░░ look silly well I ░░░░░░░░ Chris just pointed out ░░░░░░░░ if there s one ░░░░░░░░ thing that came out ░░░░░░░░ that debate it s ░░░░░░░░ the youth are now ░░░░░░░░ to to vinyl again ░░░░░░░░ you go that s ░░░░░░░░ Rob do you agree ░░░░░░░░ this is fair game ░░░░░░░░ talk about his mental ░░░░░░░░ in this fashion Matthew ░░░░░░░░ think it s fair ░░░░░░░░ in any election not ░░░░░░░░ because it s Joe ░░░░░░░░ running I want to ░░░░░░░░ that Joe Biden is ░░░░░░░░ that I know personally ░░░░░░░░ course I worked in ░░░░░░░░ campaign and it this ░░░░░░░░ part of what we ░░░░░░░░ about him his his ░░░░░░░░ these things are seen ░░░░░░░░ my the members of ░░░░░░░░ party the party faithful ░░░░░░░░ just him being Joe ░░░░░░░░ unvarnished he s not ░░░░░░░░ he s far from ░░░░░░░░ but he is his ░░░░░░░░ self and he is ░░░░░░░░ of gaffes it s ░░░░░░░░ of what made for ░░░░░░░░ great memes during the ░░░░░░░░ Obama presidency so you ░░░░░░░░ it s part of ░░░░░░░░ we love him and ░░░░░░░░ want to say that ░░░░░░░░ makes gaffes too and ░░░░░░░░ we even come to ░░░░░░░░ some of those when ░░░░░░░░ may made the mistake ░░░░░░░░ saying about seizing airports ░░░░░░░░ colonial America I think ░░░░░░░░ could all just kind ░░░░░░░░ have a good chuckle ░░░░░░░░ that so you know ░░░░░░░░ think some of these ░░░░░░░░ cancel they cancel each ░░░░░░░░ out I don t ░░░░░░░░ they re really taking ░░░░░░░░ that seriously but I ░░░░░░░░ with Chris it was ░░░░░░░░ a low blow for ░░░░░░░░ Leon Castro to go ░░░░░░░░ and I think that ░░░░░░░░ he s gonna suffer ░░░░░░░░ same fate as anyone ░░░░░░░░ did who made that ░░░░░░░░ comment in the previous ░░░░░░░░ they re gone from ░░░░░░░░ debate stage now I ░░░░░░░░ the same for him ░░░░░░░░ yeah Robin and Chris ░░░░░░░░ you both thank you ░░░░░░░░ much for your time ░░░░░░░░ you bet thank you ░░░░░░░░ a bunch possible new ░░░░░░░░ sanctions against Iran and ░░░░░░░░ Trump names his latest ░░░░░░░░ Security Advisor his fourth ░░░░░░░░ taking office Joel Rubin ░░░░░░░░ me now for analysis ░░░░░░░░ these he s a ░░░░░░░░ member of the Obama ░░░░░░░░ Department and currently president ░░░░░░░░ Washington Strategy Group and ░░░░░░░░ joins me from Washington ░░░░░░░░ C Joel welcome to ░░░░░░░░ program great to be ░░░░░░░░ you Matthew so Donald ░░░░░░░░ s named a new ░░░░░░░░ Security adviser following the ░░░░░░░░ of John Bolton Robert ░░░░░░░░ O Brien is his ░░░░░░░░ and he s been ░░░░░░░░ frequent guest on this ░░░░░░░░ he s anti Iranian ░░░░░░░░ deal it s fair ░░░░░░░░ say he s Pro ░░░░░░░░ first when it comes ░░░░░░░░ foreign policy but he ░░░░░░░░ t a Trump supporter ░░░░░░░░ 2016 what s your ░░░░░░░░ to his nomination well ░░░░░░░░ seems to be a ░░░░░░░░ pick certainly he is ░░░░░░░░ who is aligned with ░░░░░░░░ president on policy but ░░░░░░░░ the immediate predecessor John ░░░░░░░░ he actually seems to ░░░░░░░░ a personality that can ░░░░░░░░ with others and in ░░░░░░░░ interagency process as we ░░░░░░░░ it which is managing ░░░░░░░░ State Department the Defense ░░░░░░░░ the intelligence agency all ░░░░░░░░ those entities it s ░░░░░░░░ important to be good ░░░░░░░░ and have a thick ░░░░░░░░ and not push people ░░░░░░░░ and that s what ░░░░░░░░ Bolton did and that ░░░░░░░░ what led to his ░░░░░░░░ ultimately hopefully with o ░░░░░░░░ he ll be able ░░░░░░░░ manage the process more ░░░░░░░░ and and what s ░░░░░░░░ reaction to President Trump ░░░░░░░░ new sanctions on Iran ░░░░░░░░ it feels like it ░░░░░░░░ more of the same ░░░░░░░░ upon sanctions the United ░░░░░░░░ we ve essentially sanctioned ░░░░░░░░ running oil from the ░░░░░░░░ markets but they re ░░░░░░░░ creating the kinds of ░░░░░░░░ that the president says ░░░░░░░░ wants in particular a ░░░░░░░░ of Iranian behavior in ░░░░░░░░ region a return to ░░░░░░░░ negotiating table by Iran ░░░░░░░░ back on their nuclear ░░░░░░░░ all of those objectives ░░░░░░░░ the sanctions policy the ░░░░░░░░ pressure policy is the ░░░░░░░░ calls it are having ░░░░░░░░ opposite effects and so ░░░░░░░░ sanctions yesterday it s ░░░░░░░░ real good to make ░░░░░░░░ impact on Iranian behavior ░░░░░░░░ really headed in the ░░░░░░░░ direction what direction do ░░░░░░░░ think we need to ░░░░░░░░ in I think we ░░░░░░░░ to flip the switch ░░░░░░░░ get back to the ░░░░░░░░ dynamic that we had ░░░░░░░░ the Obama Administration and ░░░░░░░░ was available to the ░░░░░░░░ for the first 18 ░░░░░░░░ months of his administration ░░░░░░░░ if you remember at ░░░░░░░░ time Secretary of Defense ░░░░░░░░ Secretary of State Tillerson ░░░░░░░░ the president from ending ░░░░░░░░ Iran nuclear deal and ░░░░░░░░ since then we ve ░░░░░░░░ seen tensions ratcheting upwards ░░░░░░░░ it s not as ░░░░░░░░ Iran can t do ░░░░░░░░ in the region can ░░░░░░░░ restart its nuclear program ░░░░░░░░ can do all of ░░░░░░░░ and so when that ░░░░░░░░ it s very difficult ░░░░░░░░ roll back to a ░░░░░░░░ er place and we ░░░░░░░░ on the precipice right ░░░░░░░░ of military action and ░░░░░░░░ is not something that ░░░░░░░░ are ready for and ░░░░░░░░ we at a point ░░░░░░░░ where we can look ░░░░░░░░ and say that it ░░░░░░░░ a definitive mistake to ░░░░░░░░ the nuclear deal I ░░░░░░░░ that from my perspective ░░░░░░░░ s clear but there ░░░░░░░░ people of course who ░░░░░░░░ the nuclear deal who ░░░░░░░░ very troubled with Iranian ░░░░░░░░ as they should be ░░░░░░░░ I am as well ░░░░░░░░ and that s why ░░░░░░░░ supported the nuclear deal ░░░░░░░░ try to lock in ░░░░░░░░ because what we ve ░░░░░░░░ from decades of experience ░░░░░░░░ Iran is that there ░░░░░░░░ no military way to ░░░░░░░░ a running behavior in ░░░░░░░░ s gonna require their ░░░░░░░░ and that means getting ░░░░░░░░ to agree at the ░░░░░░░░ to rollback their behavior ░░░░░░░░ that in the case ░░░░░░░░ the Iran deal of ░░░░░░░░ nuclear program and that ░░░░░░░░ painstaking and they committed ░░░░░░░░ it and so at ░░░░░░░░ moment right now the ░░░░░░░░ isn t can we ░░░░░░░░ Iran the question is ░░░░░░░░ are we going to ░░░░░░░░ Iran s behavior from ░░░░░░░░ worse and the military ░░░░░░░░ is not a guaranteed ░░░░░░░░ that s going to ░░░░░░░░ we ve seen Iraq ░░░░░░░░ see how those types ░░░░░░░░ actions do not guarantee ░░░░░░░░ outcomes that one once ░░░░░░░░ we do know what ░░░░░░░░ worked most recently and ░░░░░░░░ was diplomatic arrangement we ░░░░░░░░ to find a way ░░░░░░░░ get back to the ░░░░░░░░ and cut a New ░░░░░░░░ so now we re ░░░░░░░░ this new situation where ░░░░░░░░ have been attacks on ░░░░░░░░ oil facilities what are ░░░░░░░░ options now so in ░░░░░░░░ near term on the ░░░░░░░░ oil facilities what s ░░░░░░░░ dangerous and frightening quite ░░░░░░░░ about this attack is ░░░░░░░░ this was the the ░░░░░░░░ facility in Saudi Arabia ░░░░░░░░ s not as if ░░░░░░░░ wasn t protected but ░░░░░░░░ were able to get ░░░░░░░░ there undetected and essentially ░░░░░░░░ its production in half ░░░░░░░░ there are more vulnerable ░░░░░░░░ out there so we ░░░░░░░░ to get with our ░░░░░░░░ we need to have ░░░░░░░░ engage the Iranians we ░░░░░░░░ to ensure that the ░░░░░░░░ don t take any ░░░░░░░░ actions and make commitments ░░░░░░░░ the Iranians that there ░░░░░░░░ upsides to their pulling ░░░░░░░░ in their behavior not ░░░░░░░░ more punishment and so ░░░░░░░░ president it seems like ░░░░░░░░ his modus operandi is ░░░░░░░░ to add more penalty ░░░░░░░░ hopes that he ll ░░░░░░░░ the other side and ░░░░░░░░ s not happening in ░░░░░░░░ case and so it ░░░░░░░░ takes us into a ░░░░░░░░ negative cycle rather than ░░░░░░░░ opportunity to reverse the ░░░░░░░░ behavior making this even ░░░░░░░░ complicated the White House ░░░░░░░░ saying that the Trump ░░░░░░░░ can t say definitively ░░░░░░░░ it was Iran who ░░░░░░░░ behind the attacks but ░░░░░░░░ in all likelihood it ░░░░░░░░ so where does that ░░░░░░░░ Washington and dealing with ░░░░░░░░ well there are a ░░░░░░░░ of things to look ░░░░░░░░ first and foremost that ░░░░░░░░ Secretary of State went ░░░░░░░░ to Saudi Arabia to ░░░░░░░░ with the Saudis which ░░░░░░░░ upset Congress quite frankly ░░░░░░░░ rather than going to ░░░░░░░░ to brief Congress and ░░░░░░░░ authorization potentially for further ░░░░░░░░ he s going to ░░░░░░░░ Arabia I m looking ░░░░░░░░ he s asking for ░░░░░░░░ permission secondarily there are ░░░░░░░░ in the region like ░░░░░░░░ United Arab Emirates that ░░░░░░░░ recently were very hawkish ░░░░░░░░ Iran and are now ░░░░░░░░ back they re very ░░░░░░░░ about what Iran can ░░░░░░░░ so the options are ░░░░░░░░ avoid major conflict the ░░░░░░░░ and the UAE and ░░░░░░░░ in the region understand ░░░░░░░░ Iran is right there ░░░░░░░░ if Iran long she ░░░░░░░░ are there their Houthi ░░░░░░░░ in Yemen law she ░░░░░░░░ we re gonna have ░░░░░░░░ try to change the ░░░░░░░░ and one of the ░░░░░░░░ areas of risk right ░░░░░░░░ is the war in ░░░░░░░░ there have been major ░░░░░░░░ in Congress bipartisan efforts ░░░░░░░░ end American support for ░░░░░░░░ Saudi war in Yemen ░░░░░░░░ would be a good ░░░░░░░░ point to try to ░░░░░░░░ that back and shift ░░░░░░░░ dynamic and get some ░░░░░░░░ the scenes talks going ░░░░░░░░ is how you can ░░░░░░░░ this dynamic Joel thank ░░░░░░░░ so much for your ░░░░░░░░ today
