Kasich Defends Medicaid Expansion: We Should Help People Get Out of a Ditch

Wallace OK Let me ░░░░░░░░ up on another issue ░░░░░░░░ Cato and a lot ░░░░░░░░ other conservatives don t ░░░░░░░░ and that is that ░░░░░░░░ push ObamaCare s expansion ░░░░░░░░ Medicaid through in your ░░░░░░░░ of Ohio over the ░░░░░░░░ strong objections of the ░░░░░░░░ controlled legislature state legislature ░░░░░░░░ Ohio And here are ░░░░░░░░ critics complaints they say ░░░░░░░░ Ohio will be on ░░░░░░░░ hook long term after ░░░░░░░░ aid begins to run ░░░░░░░░ They also say that ░░░░░░░░ were one of the ░░░░░░░░ Republican governors to give ░░░░░░░░ Obama bipartisan cover on ░░░░░░░░ Your answer KASICH Yes ░░░░░░░░ first of all I ░░░░░░░░ opposed to ObamaCare and ░░░░░░░░ ve been clear on ░░░░░░░░ Medicaid has been expanded ░░░░░░░░ expanded by Ronald Reagan ░░░░░░░░ think three or four ░░░░░░░░ In addition to that ░░░░░░░░ of locking people in ░░░░░░░░ who have mental health ░░░░░░░░ give them treatment and ░░░░░░░░ them out and that ░░░░░░░░ us money Instead of ░░░░░░░░ the drug addicted in ░░░░░░░░ and having them be ░░░░░░░░ and back in prison ░░░░░░░░ treat them and we ░░░░░░░░ a 10 percent recidivism ░░░░░░░░ for those people drug ░░░░░░░░ And for working poor ░░░░░░░░ of us all paying ░░░░░░░░ care when they go ░░░░░░░░ there and they don ░░░░░░░░ have insurance they now ░░░░░░░░ health care so they ░░░░░░░░ not sicker and more ░░░░░░░░ Now we not only ░░░░░░░░ money by doing this ░░░░░░░░ but at the same ░░░░░░░░ frankly morally we re ░░░░░░░░ people get up on ░░░░░░░░ feet and have a ░░░░░░░░ life or a better ░░░░░░░░ And let me say ░░░░░░░░ you that conservative principles ░░░░░░░░ that in the United ░░░░░░░░ of America every once ░░░░░░░░ a while we give ░░░░░░░░ helping hand to somebody ░░░░░░░░ get out of the ░░░░░░░░ so they then can ░░░░░░░░ their God given purpose ░░░░░░░░ doesn t mean we ░░░░░░░░ give them a handout ░░░░░░░░ also expect personal responsibility ░░░░░░░░ we help them So ░░░░░░░░ know I don t ░░░░░░░░ what all these folks ░░░░░░░░ saying Again our Medicaid ░░░░░░░░ rate some of the ░░░░░░░░ In regard to Medicaid ░░░░░░░░ two points one we ░░░░░░░░ our money back to ░░░░░░░░ people here in Ohio ░░░░░░░░ the federal government has ░░░░░░░░ money And secondly I ░░░░░░░░ take a Medicaid program ░░░░░░░░ I would block grant ░░░░░░░░ empowering states to deal ░░░░░░░░ those who are sick ░░░░░░░░ poor in the way ░░░░░░░░ they can so it ░░░░░░░░ not a one size ░░░░░░░░ all mentality So it ░░░░░░░░ fits together And remember ░░░░░░░░ was one of the ░░░░░░░░ of the last time ░░░░░░░░ balanced the budget in ░░░░░░░░ and we had surpluses ░░░░░░░░ four years and we ░░░░░░░░ taxes and the economy ░░░░░░░░ growing So what is ░░░░░░░░ not to like about ░░░░░░░░ I don t know ░░░░░░░░ I want to pick ░░░░░░░░ you talked about the ░░░░░░░░ component of the argument ░░░░░░░░ you have made an ░░░░░░░░ with me and you ░░░░░░░░ made it last year ░░░░░░░░ a big conservative donors ░░░░░░░░ I want to put ░░░░░░░░ on the screen what ░░░░░░░░ said A woman was ░░░░░░░░ you about expansion of ░░░░░░░░ You said I don ░░░░░░░░ know about you lady ░░░░░░░░ when I get to ░░░░░░░░ pearly gates I m ░░░░░░░░ to have an answer ░░░░░░░░ what I ve done ░░░░░░░░ the poor Now reportedly ░░░░░░░░ people walked out after ░░░░░░░░ said that and the ░░░░░░░░ was that John Kasich ░░░░░░░░ that you re not ░░░░░░░░ good Christian unless you ░░░░░░░░ a massive increase in ░░░░░░░░ KASICH Yes well first ░░░░░░░░ all it s not ░░░░░░░░ being a Christian The ░░░░░░░░ and Christian principles of ░░░░░░░░ country say basically the ░░░░░░░░ thing Chris And look ░░░░░░░░ m a public official ░░░░░░░░ I m also I ░░░░░░░░ a leader in terms ░░░░░░░░ how this country ought ░░░░░░░░ move And my sense ░░░░░░░░ is that it is ░░░░░░░░ that we do not ░░░░░░░░ the poor the widowed ░░░░░░░░ disabled I just think ░░░░░░░░ s that s the ░░░░░░░░ America is And I ░░░░░░░░ there s a moral ░░░░░░░░ to it In my ░░░░░░░░ there s not only ░░░░░░░░ moral aspect where some ░░░░░░░░ s lives have been ░░░░░░░░ because of what we ░░░░░░░░ done but it also ░░░░░░░░ us money in the ░░░░░░░░ run and I never ░░░░░░░░ that to that woman ░░░░░░░░ said it to Ohio ░░░░░░░░ of the House And ░░░░░░░░ the way the legislature ░░░░░░░░ reaffirmed the expansion of ░░░░░░░░ in this last budget ░░░░░░░░ overwhelming numbers So we ░░░░░░░░ never have gotten this ░░░░░░░░ if leaders hadn t ░░░░░░░░ it But look it ░░░░░░░░ bringing our money back ░░░░░░░░ solve our problems That ░░░░░░░░ actually conservative Bring our ░░░░░░░░ back to solve our ░░░░░░░░ The same thing we ░░░░░░░░ do in education we ░░░░░░░░ do in job training ░░░░░░░░ highway funding I mean ░░░░░░░░ is the way we ░░░░░░░░ to be moving.”
