Bill Weir: If the BBB Passes, Deep Red States Will See Huge Energy Price Increase

SIDNER All right New ░░░░░░░░ morning speaking of the ░░░░░░░░ President Trump s so ░░░░░░░░ big beautiful bill he ░░░░░░░░ it that but it ░░░░░░░░ have really ugly consequences ░░░░░░░░ your energy bill Senate ░░░░░░░░ introduced a last minute ░░░░░░░░ on the solar and ░░░░░░░░ industries which could make ░░░░░░░░ harder to get new ░░░░░░░░ electricity onto the grid ░░░░░░░░ data shows some deep ░░░░░░░░ states like Texas Oklahoma ░░░░░░░░ Kansas would see really ░░░░░░░░ energy prices in the ░░░░░░░░ 10 years or so ░░░░░░░░ the spending bill passes ░░░░░░░░ it is now CNN ░░░░░░░░ climate correspondent Bill Weir ░░░░░░░░ me now with more ░░░░░░░░ this Give us some ░░░░░░░░ of what is this ░░░░░░░░ tax WEIR Well it ░░░░░░░░ everybody to be honest ░░░░░░░░ knew that the incentives ░░░░░░░░ the Inflation Reduction Act ░░░░░░░░ sustainable renewable energies were ░░░░░░░░ to be pulled back ░░░░░░░░ one thought they would ░░░░░░░░ to murder the entire ░░░░░░░░ of wind and solar ░░░░░░░░ billions that are in ░░░░░░░░ pipeline and development That ░░░░░░░░ what happened over the ░░░░░░░░ basically levying not just ░░░░░░░░ not just pulling away ░░░░░░░░ incentives but a punitive ░░░░░░░░ that unless you could ░░░░░░░░ that your solar panels ░░░░░░░░ your roof or your ░░░░░░░░ have no components made ░░░░░░░░ China you would be ░░░░░░░░ in a way that ░░░░░░░░ just prohibitively keep people ░░░░░░░░ of sun and wind ░░░░░░░░ are now the two ░░░░░░░░ forms of energy The ░░░░░░░░ and wind plus battery ░░░░░░░░ account for about 90 ░░░░░░░░ new energy installations right ░░░░░░░░ And so that tax ░░░░░░░░ set everybody on edge ░░░░░░░░ Ernst of Iowa Senator ░░░░░░░░ Grassley is supporting this ░░░░░░░░ with Lisa Murkowski of ░░░░░░░░ to try to amend ░░░░░░░░ and at least push ░░░░░░░░ deadline back If you ░░░░░░░░ construction by 2027 you ░░░░░░░░ still get these you ░░░░░░░░ you wouldn t be ░░░░░░░░ on this But there ░░░░░░░░ a huge fight right ░░░░░░░░ over this because people ░░░░░░░░ t have to dream ░░░░░░░░ abundant clean energy It ░░░░░░░░ now here Texas leads ░░░░░░░░ nation in solar and ░░░░░░░░ installations Despite their politics ░░░░░░░░ you know You do ░░░░░░░░ sort of ideology it ░░░░░░░░ the most economically sensible ░░░░░░░░ these days The rest ░░░░░░░░ the world is heading ░░░░░░░░ this direction and this ░░░░░░░░ is this one is ░░░░░░░░ over This fight could ░░░░░░░░ heated today SIDNER Ultimately ░░░░░░░░ might this hurt the ░░░░░░░░ WEIR Well that s ░░░░░░░░ thing It would hurt ░░░░░░░░ supporters in deep red ░░░░░░░░ Energy Innovations this think ░░░░░░░░ just crunched the numbers ░░░░░░░░ said if you strip ░░░░░░░░ these incentives right now ░░░░░░░░ average household in Texas ░░░░░░░░ electricity prices would go ░░░░░░░░ almost 20 you know ░░░░░░░░ bucks a year by ░░░░░░░░ South Carolina up 16 ░░░░░░░░ up 18 Forgive me ░░░░░░░░ said 20 on it ░░░░░░░░ 16 in Texas there ░░░░░░░░ these red states and ░░░░░░░░ intentionally put a lot ░░░░░░░░ these projects in red ░░░░░░░░ hoping that when the ░░░░░░░░ and the citizens there ░░░░░░░░ see the benefits of ░░░░░░░░ it d be harder ░░░░░░░░ rake back And that ░░░░░░░░ the fight we are ░░░░░░░░ right now But honestly ░░░░░░░░ from Elon Musk to ░░░░░░░░ North American Building Trades ░░░░░░░░ is opposed to this ░░░░░░░░ even some energy industries ░░░░░░░░ t a big fan ░░░░░░░░ this because it takes ░░░░░░░░ so many options right ░░░░░░░░ of sun and wind ░░░░░░░░ are desperately needed to ░░░░░░░░ up in the AI ░░░░░░░░ SIDNER Yeah it would ░░░░░░░░ a real big shocker ░░░░░░░░ people if their energy ░░░░░░░░ did indeed go up ░░░░░░░░ much in places where ░░░░░░░░ is so extremely hot ░░░░░░░░ Weir thank you so ░░░░░░░░ Really appreciate your reporting ░░░░░░░░ this, really important reporting.”
