>> A prominent Republican senator ░░░░░░░░ is not like the ░░░░░░░░ This week on Firing ░░░░░░░░ It was something that ░░░░░░░░ history said was impossible ░░░░░░░░ all intents and purposes ░░░░░░░░ was political roadkill Margaret ░░░░░░░░ Senator Lisa Murkowski is ░░░░░░░░ her fourth full term ░░░░░░░░ conventional political wisdom says ░░░░░░░░ career should have ended ░░░░░░░░ 2010 when she lost ░░░░░░░░ Republican primary to a ░░░░░░░░ from the far right ░░░░░░░░ I announced today that ░░░░░░░░ will be a write ░░░░░░░░ candidate in November Margaret ░░░░░░░░ wasn t on the ░░░░░░░░ so Alaska voters had ░░░░░░░░ write her name in ░░░░░░░░ spell it correctly And ░░░░░░░░ did We made history ░░░░░░░░ applauding and cheering Alaskans ░░░░░░░░ history Margaret Usually just ░░░░░░░░ threat of a primary ░░░░░░░░ is enough to keep ░░░░░░░░ in line Any Republican ░░░░░░░░ doesn t act on ░░░░░░░░ fraud should be immediately ░░░░░░░░ and get out Out ░░░░░░░░ cheering Margaret But Murkowski ░░░░░░░░ the exception to that ░░░░░░░░ She writes about the ░░░░░░░░ that gives her in ░░░░░░░░ US Senate in her ░░░░░░░░ book My place in ░░░░░░░░ middle is often uncomfortable ░░░░░░░░ lonely but it s ░░░░░░░░ I feel I belong ░░░░░░░░ With unrest in the ░░░░░░░░ East and an upcoming ░░░░░░░░ vote on Trump s ░░░░░░░░ beautiful bill what does ░░░░░░░░ Lisa Murkowski say now ░░░░░░░░ Firing Line with Margaret ░░░░░░░░ is made possible in ░░░░░░░░ by Robert Granieri the ░░░░░░░░ Foundation Vanessa and Henry ░░░░░░░░ the Fairweather Foundation Peter ░░░░░░░░ Mary Kalikow Pritzker Military ░░░░░░░░ Cliff and Laurel Asness ░░░░░░░░ Meadowlark Foundation the Beth ░░░░░░░░ Ravenel Curry Foundation And ░░░░░░░░ the following Corporate funding ░░░░░░░░ provided by Stevens Inc ░░░░░░░░ Lisa Murkowski welcome back ░░░░░░░░ Firing Line So good ░░░░░░░░ be with you Margaret ░░░░░░░░ s been a while ░░░░░░░░ thank you Too long ░░░░░░░░ yeah yeah In response ░░░░░░░░ President Trump s announcement ░░░░░░░░ the nation this last ░░░░░░░░ that three key nuclear ░░░░░░░░ in Iran were struck ░░░░░░░░ issued a statement saying ░░░░░░░░ I am encouraged by ░░░░░░░░ administration s assurance that ░░░░░░░░ strikes were deliberately limited ░░░░░░░░ scope Your statement also ░░░░░░░░ Congress s role as ░░░░░░░░ sole constitutional entity in ░░░░░░░░ Declaration of War Yep ░░░░░░░░ what point does the ░░░░░░░░ need to consult Congress ░░░░░░░░ this conflict Well I ░░░░░░░░ if you go to ░░░░░░░░ specifics of the War ░░░░░░░░ Act it requires a ░░░░░░░░ period to Congress then ░░░░░░░░ specific time period within ░░░░░░░░ Congress acts It is ░░░░░░░░ that the Commander in ░░░░░░░░ have the ability the ░░░░░░░░ in an emergency when ░░░░░░░░ security of the country ░░░░░░░░ at risk to be ░░░░░░░░ to move quickly And ░░░░░░░░ think this is what ░░░░░░░░ saw with these precise ░░░░░░░░ to go after Iran ░░░░░░░░ nuclear capabilities We will ░░░░░░░░ the important conversation in ░░░░░░░░ Senate about whether or ░░░░░░░░ we move forward with ░░░░░░░░ Powers Act Should it ░░░░░░░░ clear that this is ░░░░░░░░ to a more expansive ░░░░░░░░ more expanded scope If ░░░░░░░░ re talking about literally ░░░░░░░░ on the ground the ░░░░░░░░ then I think of ░░░░░░░░ and in declaring war ░░░░░░░░ think becomes much more ░░░░░░░░ So at this moment ░░░░░░░░ time I think there ░░░░░░░░ in fairness much more ░░░░░░░░ that we all need ░░░░░░░░ have So boots on ░░░░░░░░ ground is the demarcation ░░░░░░░░ for a declaration of ░░░░░░░░ No For consultation of ░░░░░░░░ It is not It ░░░░░░░░ one example of Uh ░░░░░░░░ got it Okay Yeah ░░░░░░░░ less than 24 hours ░░░░░░░░ these precise precision and ░░░░░░░░ strikes President Trump posted ░░░░░░░░ his social media platform ░░░░░░░░ If the current Iranian ░░░░░░░░ is unable to make ░░░░░░░░ great again why wouldn ░░░░░░░░ there be regime change ░░░░░░░░ regime change the right ░░░░░░░░ I don t know ░░░░░░░░ regime change is the ░░░░░░░░ policy I believe that ░░░░░░░░ Iran s nuclear capabilities ░░░░░░░░ eliminated I think the ░░░░░░░░ is a safer place ░░░░░░░░ Senate s considering President ░░░░░░░░ s one big beautiful ░░░░░░░░ very soon Mm hm ░░░░░░░░ ve raised concerns about ░░░░░░░░ of the bill Some ░░░░░░░░ that it would result ░░░░░░░░ almost eight million people ░░░░░░░░ their Medicaid coverage And ░░░░░░░░ of Alaskan children are ░░░░░░░░ Medicaid as are nearly ░░░░░░░░ of children nationwide Can ░░░░░░░░ support a bill that ░░░░░░░░ t ensure their coverage ░░░░░░░░ protected I think it ░░░░░░░░ important when we talk ░░░░░░░░ how we ensure their ░░░░░░░░ is protected Because you ░░░░░░░░ have a situation where ░░░░░░░░ benefits have not necessarily ░░░░░░░░ cut to the individual ░░░░░░░░ because of say for ░░░░░░░░ cost shift to the ░░░░░░░░ the state may make ░░░░░░░░ decision say we cannot ░░░░░░░░ to carry this much ░░░░░░░░ the share And so ░░░░░░░░ effectively are pushed off ░░░░░░░░ if this is what ░░░░░░░░ re considering if this ░░░░░░░░ the impact of what ░░░░░░░░ being considered then you ░░░░░░░░ made vulnerable people even ░░░░░░░░ vulnerable They don t ░░░░░░░░ get less sick or ░░░░░░░░ healthy They may just ░░░░░░░░ that s the case ░░░░░░░░ sounds like you couldn ░░░░░░░░ support it Well what ░░░░░░░░ m trying to do ░░░░░░░░ literally every day is ░░░░░░░░ to work with those ░░░░░░░░ the committees and those ░░░░░░░░ leadership to try to ░░░░░░░░ the bill better Yeah ░░░░░░░░ How is it going ░░░░░░░░ we re making incremental ░░░░░░░░ As of for instance ░░░░░░░░ it comes to workforce ░░░░░░░░ there are certain areas ░░░░░░░░ the state of Alaska ░░░░░░░░ there is very very ░░░░░░░░ employable opportunities There just ░░░░░░░░ no jobs And so ░░░░░░░░ under current Snap workforce ░░░░░░░░ we have a waiver ░░░░░░░░ most of the rural ░░░░░░░░ in the state of ░░░░░░░░ Sounds like you re ░░░░░░░░ the fence still Well ░░░░░░░░ s more comprehensive than ░░░░░░░░ getting one waiver Work ░░░░░░░░ Waiver flexibility And so ░░░░░░░░ is not new I ░░░░░░░░ been trying to educate ░░░░░░░░ on Alaska for the ░░░░░░░░ time that I ve ░░░░░░░░ in the Senate Yeah ░░░░░░░░ I think we re ░░░░░░░░ some headway but it ░░░░░░░░ still hard It s ░░░░░░░░ challenging Your new book ░░░░░░░░ From Home traces your ░░░░░░░░ in politics and what ░░░░░░░░ ve learned from it ░░░░░░░░ write that one of ░░░░░░░░ goals was to bridge ░░░░░░░░ gap in understanding between ░░░░░░░░ and Alaska And I ░░░░░░░░ what was it about ░░░░░░░░ moment now that made ░░░░░░░░ feel the need to ░░░░░░░░ that gap in understanding ░░░░░░░░ wrote a book not ░░░░░░░░ I m looking to ░░░░░░░░ something next but there ░░░░░░░░ a story that really ░░░░░░░░ with the 2010 write ░░░░░░░░ campaign And I realized ░░░░░░░░ was not just about ░░░░░░░░ that moment in political ░░░░░░░░ if you will but ░░░░░░░░ was also about what ░░░░░░░░ allowed me to stay ░░░░░░░░ office since then Why ░░░░░░░░ t I accept the ░░░░░░░░ of those who participated ░░░░░░░░ that primary and just ░░░░░░░░ done ended that career ░░░░░░░░ so there was a ░░░░░░░░ there And so we ░░░░░░░░ started writing the story ░░░░░░░░ took a lot longer ░░░░░░░░ took five years This ░░░░░░░░ been a five year ░░░░░░░░ So you said my ░░░░░░░░ book it s gonna ░░░░░░░░ my only book Margaret ░░░░░░░░ this is too hard ░░░░░░░░ tea party Republican Tea ░░░░░░░░ challenger challenged you in ░░░░░░░░ closed partisan primary in ░░░░░░░░ and beat you Mm ░░░░░░░░ The thing that is ░░░░░░░░ for Republican incumbents who ░░░░░░░░ beat in a primary ░░░░░░░░ closed partisan primary election ░░░░░░░░ for them to step ░░░░░░░░ endorse the person who ░░░░░░░░ them Mm hm Republicans ░░░░░░░░ Democrats By the way ░░░░░░░░ this is a standard ░░░░░░░░ procedure in American politics ░░░░░░░░ then the party rallies ░░░░░░░░ the new insurgent nominee ░░░░░░░░ hm You chose not ░░░░░░░░ do that You explain ░░░░░░░░ great detail in the ░░░░░░░░ each step of your ░░░░░░░░ and vacillation and decision ░░░░░░░░ to run an historic ░░░░░░░░ in campaign in Alaska ░░░░░░░░ in the United States ░░░░░░░░ the state of Alaska ░░░░░░░░ you to spell your ░░░░░░░░ correctly Correctly And fill ░░░░░░░░ a bubble Right And ░░░░░░░░ ballot that didn t ░░░░░░░░ both of those two ░░░░░░░░ was then eliminated Yup ░░░░░░░░ Yup And yet you ░░░░░░░░ That you say sent ░░░░░░░░ back to Washington with ░░░░░░░░ new sense of freedom ░░░░░░░░ So as you read ░░░░░░░░ chapter carefully what you ░░░░░░░░ up is that this ░░░░░░░░ not necessarily my decision ░░░░░░░░ after that primary loss ░░░░░░░░ weren t done They ░░░░░░░░ like Wait a minute ░░░░░░░░ didn t have a ░░░░░░░░ to participate in that ░░░░░░░░ primary What then happened ░░░░░░░░ kind of this Ground ░░░░░░░░ You write about a ░░░░░░░░ swell Saying you know ░░░░░░░░ need to give us ░░░░░░░░ opportunity to vote for ░░░░░░░░ And so what we ░░░░░░░░ seeing was this very ░░░░░░░░ is not Lisa Murkowski ░░░░░░░░ think I m so ░░░░░░░░ I m going to ░░░░░░░░ the primary It was ░░░░░░░░ voters who said We ░░░░░░░░ that opportunity to support ░░░░░░░░ And so they challenged ░░░░░░░░ to do something that ░░░░░░░░ history said was impossible ░░░░░░░░ And the Washington by ░░░░░░░░ way was not in ░░░░░░░░ I mean your colleagues ░░░░░░░░ not No no no ░░░░░░░░ did not make you ░░░░░░░░ popular girl on campus ░░░░░░░░ and it was not ░░░░░░░░ my colleagues it was ░░░░░░░░ for all intents and ░░░░░░░░ I was political roadkill ░░░░░░░░ had lost And so ░░░░░░░░ political consultant who I ░░░░░░░░ had or pollster or ░░░░░░░░ kind of the whole ░░░░░░░░ that goes into a ░░░░░░░░ as soon as I ░░░░░░░░ that primary I was ░░░░░░░░ and left on my ░░░░░░░░ And so I told ░░░░░░░░ Look we re not ░░░░░░░░ have the help And ░░░░░░░░ said That s fine ░░░░░░░░ re gonna make this ░░░░░░░░ with you And that ░░░░░░░░ what you saw When ░░░░░░░░ think about campaigns where ░░░░░░░░ are proactive in what ░░░░░░░░ re doing there was ░░░░░░░░ apathy there When you ░░░░░░░░ looking at a ballot ░░░░░░░░ it says write in ░░░░░░░░ a blank line and ░░░░░░░░ have to say Lisa ░░░░░░░░ and spell it right ░░░░░░░░ is proactive voting This ░░░░░░░░ not the lesser of ░░░░░░░░ evils This is really ░░░░░░░░ what you want You ░░░░░░░░ to Washington victorious and ░░░░░░░░ a new sense of ░░░░░░░░ that as I read ░░░░░░░░ book seemed to me ░░░░░░░░ it allowed you to ░░░░░░░░ the senator you wanted ░░░░░░░░ be because you were ░░░░░░░░ in any way in ░░░░░░░░ of being accountable to ░░░░░░░░ in the Republican Party ░░░░░░░░ who had not supported ░░░░░░░░ It wasn t I ░░░░░░░░ t have to be ░░░░░░░░ to the party establishment ░░░░░░░░ was I had been ░░░░░░░░ to look around at ░░░░░░░░ people who were supporting ░░░░░░░░ If you go back ░░░░░░░░ any pictures of that ░░░░░░░░ when I am announcing ░░░░░░░░ I m gonna run ░░░░░░░░ write in campaign it ░░░░░░░░ Democrats It s Republicans ░░░░░░░░ s labor leaders It ░░░░░░░░ teachers It is slope ░░░░░░░░ up north the number ░░░░░░░░ seniors and young people ░░░░░░░░ was such a beautiful ░░░░░░░░ of Alaska And so ░░░░░░░░ m not lining up ░░░░░░░░ be a party regular ░░░░░░░░ you will I am ░░░░░░░░ line to represent Alaskans ░░░░░░░░ and foremost And that ░░░░░░░░ been kind of my ░░░░░░░░ star throughout I just ░░░░░░░░ bring the story forward ░░░░░░░░ little bit to 2022 ░░░░░░░░ hm Margaret In the ░░░░░░░░ years Alaska reformed its ░░░░░░░░ primary process Right To ░░░░░░░░ top four open primary ░░░░░░░░ then in combination with ░░░░░░░░ choice voting for the ░░░░░░░░ And because of these ░░░░░░░░ not only did you ░░░░░░░░ but you write in ░░░░░░░░ book that you won ░░░░░░░░ a much broader and ░░░░░░░░ coalition Yeah Than you ░░░░░░░░ have previously and you ░░░░░░░░ that seven states had ░░░░░░░░ opportunity to make these ░░░░░░░░ that would potentially change ░░░░░░░░ composition of the Senate ░░░░░░░░ have maybe even returned ░░░░░░░░ of your colleagues to ░░░░░░░░ Senate How could these ░░░░░░░░ impact the Senate Well ░░░░░░░░ think what we ve ░░░░░░░░ with the opening of ░░░░░░░░ primaries in Alaska and ░░░░░░░░ rank choice voting we ░░░░░░░░ seen candidates come forward ░░░░░░░░ perhaps would have been ░░░░░░░░ hesitant to do so ░░░░░░░░ they hadn t been ░░░░░░░░ quote party regular And ░░░░░░░░ again this is on ░░░░░░░░ sides of the aisle ░░░░░░░░ think you saw campaigns ░░░░░░░░ were a little more ░░░░░░░░ because not only am ░░░░░░░░ asking you to support ░░░░░░░░ but I might want ░░░░░░░░ number two vote getter ░░░░░░░░ might want them to ░░░░░░░░ me too so that ░░░░░░░░ can be their number ░░░░░░░░ selection And it changes ░░░░░░░░ tenor of the race ░░░░░░░░ it changes the tenor ░░░░░░░░ the race and what ░░░░░░░░ have seen in those ░░░░░░░░ where the effort was ░░░░░░░░ and perhaps was not ░░░░░░░░ who s opposing it ░░░░░░░░ is opposing it The ░░░░░░░░ regulars the parties themselves ░░░░░░░░ they ll lose power ░░░░░░░░ they feel threatened because ░░░░░░░░ will lose power and ░░░░░░░░ ve seen this play ░░░░░░░░ in Alaska Right now ░░░░░░░░ have coalitions in our ░░░░░░░░ legislature Think about what ░░░░░░░░ means That means you ░░░░░░░░ got strong Democrats sitting ░░░░░░░░ strong Republicans trying to ░░░░░░░░ through hard issues for ░░░░░░░░ benefit of all Alaskans ░░░░░░░░ think it s better ░░░░░░░░ And will it work ░░░░░░░░ Alaska s perhaps a ░░░░░░░░ bit different Some 60 ░░░░░░░░ Alaskans choose not to ░░░░░░░░ themselves with either party ░░░░░░░░ so we ve got ░░░░░░░░ advantage But I think ░░░░░░░░ re instructive I think ░░░░░░░░ we can be something ░░░░░░░░ look at as a ░░░░░░░░ to perhaps get some ░░░░░░░░ the very harsh partisan ░░░░░░░░ that we re seeing ░░░░░░░░ that dialed down a ░░░░░░░░ In 1973 William F ░░░░░░░░ Jr who was the ░░░░░░░░ host of Firing Line ░░░░░░░░ you know hosted a ░░░░░░░░ about reforming the primary ░░░░░░░░ system in Texas Okay ░░░░░░░░ one of his guests ░░░░░░░░ a journalist Ronnie Dugger ░░░░░░░░ made the case for ░░░░░░░░ the two party system ░░░░░░░░ Take a look I ░░░░░░░░ not inclined to fixate ░░░░░░░░ a two party system ░░░░░░░░ don t think it ░░░░░░░░ anything like a cure ░░░░░░░░ I think maybe the ░░░░░░░░ office holders often have ░░░░░░░░ vested interest in telling ░░░░░░░░ this is the sacred ░░░░░░░░ to proceed in the ░░░░░░░░ States because they re ░░░░░░░░ office holders But I ░░░░░░░░ t think it s ░░░░░░░░ There was that chapter ░░░░░░░░ your book called Voters ░░░░░░░░ We Don t Need ░░░░░░░░ And you write The ░░░░░░░░ parties deeply ingrained in ░░░░░░░░ state are threatened by ░░░░░░░░ and have the machines ░░░░░░░░ fight back Sounds like ░░░░░░░░ re saying the political ░░░░░░░░ are undermining real democracy ░░░░░░░░ think they re holding ░░░░░░░░ what they have It ░░░░░░░░ substantial power And I ░░░░░░░░ we re seeing that ░░░░░░░░ built out even more ░░░░░░░░ those who would kind ░░░░░░░░ dare to cross the ░░░░░░░░ whether it s in ░░░░░░░░ middle or explore something ░░░░░░░░ get shut down pretty ░░░░░░░░ Would you have that ░░░░░░░░ and would you be ░░░░░░░░ to think about it ░░░░░░░░ advocate this way had ░░░░░░░░ not been sort of ░░░░░░░░ the way you write ░░░░░░░░ Ah From the experience ░░░░░░░░ your own open primaries ░░░░░░░░ your independent write in ░░░░░░░░ Yeah yeah yeah You ░░░░░░░░ cause I think we ░░░░░░░░ a tendency to just ░░░░░░░░ of get sucked into ░░░░░░░░ we know and we ░░░░░░░░ to think about what ░░░░░░░░ might even be possible ░░░░░░░░ And I have thought ░░░░░░░░ what might be possible ░░░░░░░░ My And you ve ░░░░░░░░ it Well and my ░░░░░░░░ in the middle is ░░░░░░░░ uncomfortable sometimes lonely But ░░░░░░░░ s where I feel ░░░░░░░░ belong as odd as ░░░░░░░░ is I belong in ░░░░░░░░ place that s uncomfortable ░░░░░░░░ lonely What does that ░░░░░░░░ about me What does ░░░░░░░░ say about our political ░░░░░░░░ that the way you ░░░░░░░░ represent the majority of ░░░░░░░░ is totally at odds ░░░░░░░░ the way we ve ░░░░░░░░ up our political primaries ░░░░░░░░ you mentioned one of ░░░░░░░░ chapters in my books ░░░░░░░░ of the other chapters ░░░░░░░░ my books is kind ░░░░░░░░ the family motto If ░░░░░░░░ s a harder way ░░░░░░░░ ll find it And ░░░░░░░░ I feel like I ░░░░░░░░ living that out in ░░░░░░░░ political life as well ░░░░░░░░ you are a Republican ░░░░░░░░ who supports public broadcasting ░░░░░░░░ Yes Public media Yes ░░░░░░░░ a Republican on PBS ░░░░░░░░ a Republican senator who ░░░░░░░░ PBS I wanna ask ░░░░░░░░ about this rescission package ░░░░░░░░ has been sent up ░░░░░░░░ the hill This of ░░░░░░░░ is a bill that ░░░░░░░░ if passed take back ░░░░░░░░ 9 billion about one ░░░░░░░░ approximately which has been ░░░░░░░░ allocated to public broadcasting ░░░░░░░░ find that when I ░░░░░░░░ to people about PBS ░░░░░░░░ don t realize that ░░░░░░░░ those federal dollars about ░░░░░░░░ go to local stations ░░░░░░░░ rural stations like in ░░░░░░░░ state to pay for ░░░░░░░░ broadcasting and childhood education ░░░░░░░░ important in a state ░░░░░░░░ Alaska where 60 of ░░░░░░░░ and four year olds ░░░░░░░░ t go to preschool ░░░░░░░░ that early childhood education ░░░░░░░░ from public broadcasting Do ░░░░░░░░ find that other Republicans ░░░░░░░░ sympathetic to this message ░░░░░░░░ even understand it I ░░░░░░░░ certainly those that are ░░░░░░░░ rural states or have ░░░░░░░░ rural populations get it ░░░░░░░░ I have tried to ░░░░░░░░ to them that it ░░░░░░░░ not just having a ░░░░░░░░ program on Saturday morning ░░░░░░░░ listen to but it ░░░░░░░░ in many instances it ░░░░░░░░ about your livelihoods Down ░░░░░░░░ Bethel that broadcast out ░░░░░░░░ 50 some odd little ░░░░░░░░ villages every morning at ░░░░░░░░ 40 during the spring ░░░░░░░░ give the ice breakup ░░░░░░░░ so that people know ░░░░░░░░ the ice may be ░░░░░░░░ up and how it ░░░░░░░░ gonna push down the ░░░░░░░░ and whether or not ░░░░░░░░ s gonna flood my ░░░░░░░░ These are things that ░░░░░░░░ Alaskans are not nice ░░░░░░░░ haves but really vital ░░░░░░░░ have The rescission package ░░░░░░░░ a deadline in terms ░░░░░░░░ when it has to ░░░░░░░░ voted on Right right ░░░░░░░░ there s a lot ░░░░░░░░ other business before the ░░░░░░░░ by then Is it ░░░░░░░░ that the Senate will ░░░░░░░░ out of time before ░░░░░░░░ can consider it Yes ░░░░░░░░ it likely It is ░░░░░░░░ that we could run ░░░░░░░░ of time Does that ░░░░░░░░ some hope or some ░░░░░░░░ think it Some hope ░░░░░░░░ those who support public ░░░░░░░░ I think it does ░░░░░░░░ think it does And ░░░░░░░░ am encouraging people to ░░░░░░░░ weigh in let us ░░░░░░░░ I m coming at ░░░░░░░░ from not only a ░░░░░░░░ of public broadcasting but ░░░░░░░░ the more institutional perspective ░░░░░░░░ m an appropriator I ░░░░░░░░ a senator I know ░░░░░░░░ Article One says it ░░░░░░░░ our job to it ░░░░░░░░ the power of the ░░░░░░░░ it s appropriations We ░░░░░░░░ only authorized this but ░░░░░░░░ appropriated to it and ░░░░░░░░ expect implementation That s ░░░░░░░░ that the executive does ░░░░░░░░ ve reviewed it They ░░░░░░░░ to have these funds ░░░░░░░░ back It s a ░░░░░░░░ to us Is this ░░░░░░░░ place where Congress could ░░░░░░░░ assert their authority their ░░░░░░░░ authority against an encroaching ░░░░░░░░ executive Branch I think ░░░░░░░░ should And I think ░░░░░░░░ have in the past ░░░░░░░░ We have seen before ░░░░░░░░ we have rejected rescissions ░░░░░░░░ You write in your ░░░░░░░░ about January 6th and ░░░░░░░░ scary that day was ░░░░░░░░ you because after texting ░░░░░░░░ son the truth was ░░░░░░░░ you weren t sure ░░░░░░░░ you would ever you ░░░░░░░░ I love you And ░░░░░░░░ sent that text cause ░░░░░░░░ didn t know if ░░░░░░░░ would ever see him ░░░░░░░░ It sounds so melodramatic ░░░░░░░░ But sitting in that ░░░░░░░░ at that time when ░░░░░░░░ of a sudden you ░░░░░░░░ hear the doors slamming ░░░░░░░░ and it was like ░░░░░░░░ apparated in the room ░░░░░░░░ boom And you have ░░░░░░░░ that you ve not ░░░░░░░░ before in places that ░░░░░░░░ shouldn t be It ░░░░░░░░ I would just say ░░░░░░░░ it was scary It ░░░░░░░░ this was not the ░░░░░░░░ right Now violence hasn ░░░░░░░░ gotten any better since ░░░░░░░░ 6th Yeah There was ░░░░░░░░ murder of the two ░░░░░░░░ lawmakers firebombing in the ░░░░░░░░ Party headquarters in New ░░░░░░░░ two assassination attempts against ░░░░░░░░ Trump Are you ever ░░░░░░░░ for your safety I ░░░░░░░░ very aware of my ░░░░░░░░ I think we have ░░░░░░░░ be but I also ░░░░░░░░ to people I come ░░░░░░░░ a place where we ░░░░░░░░ more worried about whether ░░░░░░░░ moose is gonna charge ░░░░░░░░ But I know I ░░░░░░░░ t make light of ░░░░░░░░ I have to take ░░░░░░░░ own safety into consideration ░░░░░░░░ something I like to ░░░░░░░░ though At the end ░░░░░░░░ your book you write ░░░░░░░░ I m not a ░░░░░░░░ just to be a ░░░░░░░░ of a party I ░░░░░░░░ myself Republican because of ░░░░░░░░ values I hold The ░░░░░░░░ Party could censure me ░░░░░░░░ call me names but ░░░░░░░░ could not take from ░░░░░░░░ the values deep in ░░░░░░░░ core as a person ░░░░░░░░ bear allegiance to the ░░░░░░░░ I serve Alaskans as ░░░░░░░░ I can with conscience ░░░░░░░░ my guide I am ░░░░░░░░ giving any of that ░░░░░░░░ Does that mean you ░░░░░░░░ gonna run again in ░░░░░░░░ That is so far ░░░░░░░░ Oh it s not ░░░░░░░░ far I m so ░░░░░░░░ it is so far ░░░░░░░░ Here s why No ░░░░░░░░ here s why I ░░░░░░░░ Why Because to many ░░░░░░░░ you represent a kind ░░░░░░░░ Republican that some say ░░░░░░░░ some feel the tent ░░░░░░░░ t big enough for ░░░░░░░░ Mm hm yup But ░░░░░░░░ 2028 President Trump will ░░░░░░░░ leaving office And if ░░░░░░░░ are reelected it will ░░░░░░░░ that there is room ░░░░░░░░ the tent And the ░░░░░░░░ is big enough for ░░░░░░░░ of your ilk to ░░░░░░░░ a placeholder for those ░░░░░░░░ of values that actually ░░░░░░░░ represented the party for ░░░░░░░░ very long time despite ░░░░░░░░ recent political realignment Which ░░░░░░░░ why I ask are ░░░░░░░░ really not giving up ░░░░░░░░ tell you I don ░░░░░░░░ give up on any ░░░░░░░░ day and I ve ░░░░░░░░ a commitment to Alaskans ░░░░░░░░ I m gonna honor ░░░░░░░░ even on the hard ░░░░░░░░ it s like nope ░░░░░░░░ is hard but you ░░░░░░░░ what Lisa You signed ░░░░░░░░ for it Alaskans asked ░░░░░░░░ to stay in the ░░░░░░░░ You re there and ░░░░░░░░ single day you re ░░░░░░░░ do the best that ░░░░░░░░ possibly can by them ░░░░░░░░ so I tell my ░░░░░░░░ we don t quit ░░░░░░░░ get hard but we ░░░░░░░░ t quit Good I ░░░░░░░░ gonna take that as ░░░░░░░░ considering yes Lisa laughs ░░░░░░░░ are no premature announcements ░░░░░░░░ on Exactly Senator Murkowski ░░░░░░░░ you for returning to ░░░░░░░░ Line Thank you good ░░░░░░░░ be back Narrator Firing ░░░░░░░░ with Margaret Hoover is ░░░░░░░░ possible in part by ░░░░░░░░ Granieri the Tepper
