LAPD Chief on Needing the National Guard: ‘Looking at the Violence Tonight, I Think We’ve Got to Make a Reassessment’’

Reporter Thank you so ░░░░░░░░ chief You just described ░░░░░░░░ pretty violent and chaotic ░░░░░░░░ What is your position ░░░░░░░░ the National Guard being ░░░░░░░░ Do we need them ░░░░░░░░ McDONNELL Well you know ░░░░░░░░ s an interesting question ░░░░░░░░ I would have said ░░░░░░░░ you know we could ░░░░░░░░ this I believe that ░░░░░░░░ would have gone through ░░░░░░░░ number of steps before ░░░░░░░░ d have deployed the ░░░░░░░░ Guard or requested deployment ░░░░░░░░ the National Guard We ░░░░░░░░ normally go to 50 ░░░░░░░░ to handle radio calls ░░░░░░░░ do the business of ░░░░░░░░ and everybody else would ░░░░░░░░ focused on the initial ░░░░░░░░ Beyond that then we ░░░░░░░░ request through the sheriff ░░░░░░░░ aid and that would ░░░░░░░░ in members of the ░░░░░░░░ other police departments in ░░░░░░░░ A County as well ░░░░░░░░ the sheriff s office ░░░░░░░░ so that didn t ░░░░░░░░ in this case because ░░░░░░░░ wasn t done through ░░░░░░░░ sheriff or through the ░░░░░░░░ through the normal chain ░░░░░░░░ was done from the ░░░░░░░░ down from the president ░░░░░░░░ that that happened And ░░░░░░░░ the National Guard was ░░░░░░░░ So they re working ░░░░░░░░ the U S Army ░░░░░░░░ for the California state ░░░░░░░░ Guard Reporter Do we ░░░░░░░░ them McDONNELL Do we ░░░░░░░░ them Well looking at ░░░░░░░░ tonight you know this ░░░░░░░░ has gotten out of ░░░░░░░░ What they re I ░░░░░░░░ before I could answer ░░░░░░░░ I d have to ░░░░░░░░ more about what their ░░░░░░░░ are what their role ░░░░░░░░ intended to be to ░░░░░░░░ able to make that ░░░░░░░░ But we have great ░░░░░░░░ in southern California here ░░░░░░░░ work together all the ░░░░░░░░ So we have tremendous ░░░░░░░░ here to say that ░░░░░░░░ would go to that ░░░░░░░░ away I d say ░░░░░░░░ re not we wouldn ░░░░░░░░ have been there yet ░░░░░░░░ at the violence tonight ░░░░░░░░ think we ve got ░░░░░░░░ make a reassessment.”
