Rep. McIver on the Arrest of Newark, N.J. Mayor: ‘Despicable; We Should All be Angry’

MCIVER Thank you so ░░░░░░░░ Councilwoman Bonnie Watson Coleman ░░░░░░░░ of all I want ░░░░░░░░ start by thanking my ░░░░░░░░ for being here with ░░░░░░░░ today both Congresswoman Bonnie ░░░░░░░░ Coleman and of course ░░░░░░░░ Bob Menendez for being ░░░░░░░░ Look we came here ░░░░░░░░ to perform our oversight ░░░░░░░░ That is why we ░░░░░░░░ here There is a ░░░░░░░░ that says that we ░░░░░░░░ able to do that ░░░░░░░░ members of Congress and ░░░░░░░░ is what we got ░░░░░░░░ to do As soon ░░░░░░░░ we got here we ░░░░░░░░ met with opposition People ░░░░░░░░ telling us that they ░░░░░░░░ getting a supervisor that ░░░░░░░░ re going to get ░░░░░░░░ to come talk with ░░░░░░░░ We waited and waited ░░░░░░░░ we went past the ░░░░░░░░ and then we had ░░░░░░░░ wait longer We actually ░░░░░░░░ over two hours to ░░░░░░░░ into this facility just ░░░░░░░░ do a simple oversight ░░░░░░░░ They say nothing is ░░░░░░░░ with the prison with ░░░░░░░░ detention center that we ░░░░░░░░ get in here that ░░░░░░░░ they re following orders ░░░░░░░░ once again they delayed ░░░░░░░░ from getting in here ░░░░░░░░ see this facility We ░░░░░░░░ in the waiting area ░░░░░░░░ a very long time ░░░░░░░░ to many staff members ░░░░░░░░ to the warden of ░░░░░░░░ location and literally still ░░░░░░░░ for ICE officials to ░░░░░░░░ here What all of ░░░░░░░░ watched occur is just ░░░░░░░░ reckless ICE is It ░░░░░░░░ unacceptable that me as ░░░░░░░░ member of Congress as ░░░░░░░░ black woman here in ░░░░░░░░ city was just assaulted ░░░░░░░░ multiple ICE officers while ░░░░░░░░ directors of ICE watched ░░░░░░░░ happen Since we toured ░░░░░░░░ whole facility with them ░░░░░░░░ one offered an apology ░░░░░░░░ said anything to me ░░░░░░░░ what occurred out here ░░░░░░░░ only was I assaulted ░░░░░░░░ Congressman Bonnie Watson was ░░░░░░░░ and of course Congressman ░░░░░░░░ Menendez was roughed up ░░░░░░░░ he was trying to ░░░░░░░░ us It makes no ░░░░░░░░ and it is highly ░░░░░░░░ how this administration is ░░░░░░░░ to restrict Congress from ░░░░░░░░ their bare duties and ░░░░░░░░ responsibilities that the people ░░░░░░░░ elected us to do ░░░░░░░░ we just witnessed was ░░░░░░░░ disgusting I m very ░░░░░░░░ I am very angry ░░░░░░░░ I am very hurt ░░░░░░░░ they could be able ░░░░░░░░ do something like that ░░░░░░░░ us These are people ░░░░░░░░ are supposed to be ░░░░░░░░ who are supposed to ░░░░░░░░ us and they have ░░░░░░░░ None of that If ░░░░░░░░ can treat three members ░░░░░░░░ Congress like that just ░░░░░░░░ how they can treat ░░░░░░░░ on the street each ░░░░░░░░ every day both undocumented ░░░░░░░░ people who are citizens ░░░░░░░░ in this country It ░░░░░░░░ absolutely no sense to ░░░░░░░░ arrest the mayor of ░░░░░░░░ largest city of this ░░░░░░░░ who did nothing wrong ░░░░░░░░ went inside of the ░░░░░░░░ and told them that ░░░░░░░░ was waiting for us ░░░░░░░░ come out because we ░░░░░░░░ conducting an oversight visit ░░░░░░░░ asked him to leave ░░░░░░░░ left out of the ░░░░░░░░ Instead of the ICE ░░░░░░░░ that were here who ░░░░░░░░ supposed to be here ░░░░░░░░ lead us on a ░░░░░░░░ they then came out ░░░░░░░░ have a huddle to ░░░░░░░░ about how the mayor ░░░░░░░░ inside and that he ░░░░░░░░ be arrested still because ░░░░░░░░ was inside They then ░░░░░░░░ back out after the ░░░░░░░░ was out here with ░░░░░░░░ all some of you ░░░░░░░░ here They then left ░░░░░░░░ still we re waiting ░░░░░░░░ a visit to come ░░░░░░░░ out here and arrest ░░░░░░░░ mayor who had already ░░░░░░░░ off of their property ░░░░░░░░ behind the gate What ░░░░░░░░ see here is despicable ░░░░░░░░ we should all be ░░░░░░░░ This is unacceptable and ░░░░░░░░ should not allow this ░░░░░░░░ be happening.”
