CNN: Conclave to Select Next Pope Expected to Begin in May

░░░░░░░░ become the next pope ░░░░░░░░ us now CNN Vatican ░░░░░░░░ Elise Allen So Elise ░░░░░░░░ don t have the ░░░░░░░░ date yet or at ░░░░░░░░ I haven t seen ░░░░░░░░ crossed today but it ░░░░░░░░ typically anywhere from 15 ░░░░░░░░ 20 days after the ░░░░░░░░ s passing When you ░░░░░░░░ at where things stand ░░░░░░░░ this moment there s ░░░░░░░░ so much made about ░░░░░░░░ number of cardinals who ░░░░░░░░ appointed by Pope Benedict ░░░░░░░░ that could have an ░░░░░░░░ on who they ultimately ░░░░░░░░ as the next pope ░░░░░░░░ much do you think ░░░░░░░░ would factor into the ░░░░░░░░ making ░░░░░░░░ would say don t ░░░░░░░░ too carefully about who ░░░░░░░░ these cardinals You know ░░░░░░░░ himself has appointed about ░░░░░░░░ of the cardinal electors ░░░░░░░░ course there are over ░░░░░░░░ cardinals in the Catholic ░░░░░░░░ Those who are 80 ░░░░░░░░ not eligible to vote ░░░░░░░░ the conclave Those who ░░░░░░░░ under 80 are There ░░░░░░░░ 135 who are under ░░░░░░░░ and are therefore eligible ░░░░░░░░ vote in a conclave ░░░░░░░░ of those men 80 ░░░░░░░░ appointed by Pope Francis ░░░░░░░░ that doesn t necessarily ░░░░░░░░ that we re going ░░░░░░░░ get somebody who is ░░░░░░░░ complete continuity with him ░░░░░░░░ know Pope Francis and ░░░░░░░░ before him and John ░░░░░░░░ II before him appointed ░░░░░░░░ not so much for ░░░░░░░░ policies You know I ░░░░░░░░ Benedict did a little ░░░░░░░░ more so Francis really ░░░░░░░░ his appointees focused on ░░░░░░░░ based off of where ░░░░░░░░ re from to highlight ░░░░░░░░ specific geographic area those ░░░░░░░░ on the peripheries places ░░░░░░░░ maybe have small Catholic ░░░░░░░░ but where he felt ░░░░░░░░ needed to be encouraged ░░░░░░░░ just have a stronger ░░░░░░░░ and stronger representation in ░░░░░░░░ church And so many ░░░░░░░░ those men we don ░░░░░░░░ necessarily know where they ░░░░░░░░ on any given issue ░░░░░░░░ it s really kind ░░░░░░░░ a mixed bag as ░░░░░░░░ re going into this ░░░░░░░░ terms of what to ░░░░░░░░ HILL It s also ░░░░░░░░ s still such a ░░░░░░░░ process I mean we ░░░░░░░░ we all know bits ░░░░░░░░ pieces and I m ░░░░░░░░ Conclave was for the ░░░░░░░░ part pretty accurate At ░░░░░░░░ that seems to be ░░░░░░░░ I m hearing from ░░░░░░░░ And yet part of ░░░░░░░░ movie too is also ░░░░░░░░ the jockeying amongst cardinals ░░░░░░░░ of the you know ░░░░░░░░ an election process in ░░░░░░░░ ways where they re ░░░░░░░░ with one another How ░░░░░░░░ of that is really ░░░░░░░░ in this moment with ░░░░░░░░ cardinals who have now ░░░░░░░░ in Rome Allen Well ░░░░░░░░ on that movie Conclave ░░░░░░░░ ll quote something that ░░░░░░░░ know my husband who ░░░░░░░░ also a commentator has ░░░░░░░░ You know if you ░░░░░░░░ looking you know for ░░░░░░░░ in that movie it ░░░░░░░░ about you know comparing ░░░░░░░░ know using Spaceballs as ░░░░░░░░ guide for you know ░░░░░░░░ travel you know So ░░░░░░░░ are some things that ░░░░░░░░ there s some things ░░░░░░░░ might you know reflect ░░░░░░░░ general process but in ░░░░░░░░ of you know accuracy ░░░░░░░░ the details you know ░░░░░░░░ wouldn t take that ░░░░░░░░ a point of reference ░░░░░░░░ se But there is ░░░░░░░░ you know jockeying to ░░░░░░░░ extent is going to ░░░░░░░░ part of the process ░░░░░░░░ know in the sense ░░░░░░░░ cardinals really want to ░░░░░░░░ out where they want ░░░░░░░░ go They need to ░░░░░░░░ out what direction they ░░░░░░░░ to go and they ░░░░░░░░ to find out which ░░░░░░░░ are going to be ░░░░░░░░ who they think are ░░░░░░░░ to be best to ░░░░░░░░ take the church in ░░░░░░░░ direction they believe it ░░░░░░░░ to go in So ░░░░░░░░ course they re going ░░░░░░░░ be talking to one ░░░░░░░░ trying to promote one ░░░░░░░░ or another one personality ░░░░░░░░ think is more up ░░░░░░░░ the task than another ░░░░░░░░ is going to be ░░░░░░░░ politicking behind the process ░░░░░░░░ it s really trying ░░░░░░░░ determine you know who ░░░░░░░░ most apt for the ░░░░░░░░ of the church and ░░░░░░░░ world today Especially coming ░░░░░░░░ a personality such as ░░░░░░░░ Francis who made such ░░░░░░░░ big impact they need ░░░░░░░░ figure out who s ░░░░░░░░ to be able to ░░░░░░░░ into to his shoes ░░░░░░░░ fill the enormous shoes ░░░░░░░░ he left behind You ░░░░░░░░ but it s also ░░░░░░░░ just Pope Francis but ░░░░░░░░ know they re electing ░░░░░░░░ successor of Peter so ░░░░░░░░ successor of a history ░░░░░░░░ 2000 years of popes ░░░░░░░░ you know So it ░░░░░░░░ really gauging the needs ░░░░░░░░ the church and the ░░░░░░░░ today in light of ░░░░░░░░ happened during Francis s ░░░░░░░░ and going from there ░░░░░░░░ And that was a ░░░░░░░░ that as you and ░░░░░░░░ talked about in the ░░░░░░░░ couple of days was ░░░░░░░░ of inclusion right that ░░░░░░░░ Francis was calling on ░░░░░░░░ church to be more ░░░░░░░░ to spend less time ░░░░░░░░ tied up in theological ░░░░░░░░ and more of it ░░░░░░░░ out to the wounded ░░░░░░░░ the suffering the people ░░░░░░░░ the margins really doing ░░░░░░░░ the ministering this more ░░░░░░░░ approach Given in many ░░░░░░░░ how successful that has ░░░░░░░░ in terms of a ░░░░░░░░ Francis who connected not ░░░░░░░░ with Catholics but with ░░░░░░░░ large number of people ░░░░░░░░ across the globe writ ░░░░░░░░ how important do you ░░░░░░░░ that is and will ░░░░░░░░ taken into account as ░░░░░░░░ cardinals think about to ░░░░░░░░ point who is taking ░░░░░░░░ helm here who is ░░░░░░░░ the church in the ░░░░░░░░ Is that the direction ░░░░░░░░ want to continue on ░░░░░░░░ You know I think ░░░░░░░░ Francis s great emphasis ░░░░░░░░ mercy and compassion and ░░░░░░░░ you know is something ░░░░░░░░ really resonated with a ░░░░░░░░ of people You know ░░░░░░░░ are going to be ░░░░░░░░ cardinals that thought maybe ░░░░░░░░ should be more clear ░░░░░░░░ certain issues They wanted ░░░░░░░░ to be clear on ░░░░░░░░ issues and moral issues ░░░░░░░░ thought he was a ░░░░░░░░ too ambiguous So they ░░░░░░░░ look for somebody you ░░░░░░░░ when we re talking ░░░░░░░░ inclusion that might be ░░░░░░░░ little you know what ░░░░░░░░ feel might be a ░░░░░░░░ clearer from the church ░░░░░░░░ traditional standpoint on those ░░░░░░░░ You know so there ░░░░░░░░ going to be some ░░░░░░░░ that want to take ░░░░░░░░ in that direction But ░░░░░░░░ think overwhelmingly Pope Francis ░░░░░░░░ approach you know to ░░░░░░░░ poor to the marginalized ░░░░░░░░ them priority saying these ░░░░░░░░ the ones that you ░░░░░░░░ Jesus himself put first ░░░░░░░░ s what the church ░░░░░░░░ be doing You know ░░░░░░░░ think that s something ░░░░░░░░ they are absolutely going ░░░░░░░░ keep as a priority ░░░░░░░░ know that s in ░░░░░░░░ sense the heart of ░░░░░░░░ gospel and Francis really ░░░░░░░░ an effort to to ░░░░░░░░ that to the fore ░░░░░░░░ the church and put ░░░░░░░░ at the center of ░░░░░░░░ action and her mentality ░░░░░░░░ know to make sure ░░░░░░░░ church s actions are ░░░░░░░░ fundamentally on a premise ░░░░░░░░ mercy and compassion more ░░░░░░░░ anything else And I ░░░░░░░░ that s something they ░░░░░░░░ certainly try to continue ░░░░░░░░ whoever comes next.”
