MODERATOR So I wanted ░░░░░░░░ start by talking a ░░░░░░░░ bit about home rule ░░░░░░░░ D C has had ░░░░░░░░ rule since 1973 and ░░░░░░░░ hard to win it ░░░░░░░░ I mentioned in the ░░░░░░░░ President Trump mentioned many ░░░░░░░░ including this week that ░░░░░░░░ wants to take over ░░░░░░░░ D C Can you ░░░░░░░░ a little bit about ░░░░░░░░ home rule is important ░░░░░░░░ D C and what ░░░░░░░░ the case for keeping ░░░░░░░░ rule BOWSER Well the ░░░░░░░░ that we actually make ░░░░░░░░ for D C becoming ░░░░░░░░ 51st state I know ░░░░░░░░ s been a lot ░░░░░░░░ talk about someplace else ░░░░░░░░ the 51st state but ░░░░░░░░ are going to be ░░░░░░░░ 51st state Because what ░░░░░░░░ means is the discussion ░░░░░░░░ ve had about whether ░░░░░░░░ president or a couple ░░░░░░░░ members of Congress can ░░░░░░░░ over our limited self ░░░░░░░░ is because we don ░░░░░░░░ enjoy the same rights ░░░░░░░░ American citizens But we ░░░░░░░░ the same as American ░░░░░░░░ We pay taxes more ░░░░░░░░ most more per capita ░░░░░░░░ any place in America ░░░░░░░░ re larger than two ░░░░░░░░ We re literally down ░░░░░░░░ street from the Congress ░░░░░░░░ we have no representation ░░░░░░░░ the case that D ░░░░░░░░ residents not to tell ░░░░░░░░ that your question wasn ░░░░░░░░ the right question but ░░░░░░░░ question for us is ░░░░░░░░ do we maintain the ░░░░░░░░ to the 51st state ░░░░░░░░ why not And we ░░░░░░░░ Americans We pay taxes ░░░░░░░░ go to war We ░░░░░░░░ all of the responsibilities ░░░░░░░░ citizenship but we don ░░░░░░░░ have all of the ░░░░░░░░ And the unfortunate answer ░░░░░░░░ it has come down ░░░░░░░░ partisanship And we don ░░░░░░░░ regard D C being ░░░░░░░░ as the 51st state ░░░░░░░░ a partisan issue but ░░░░░░░░ is an issue of ░░░░░░░░ to make our democracy ░░░░░░░░ perfect So in talking ░░░░░░░░ home rule what it ░░░░░░░░ basically is that we ░░░░░░░░ local officials we pass ░░░░░░░░ laws we have our ░░░░░░░░ budget That s sometimes ░░░░░░░░ misconception out there in ░░░░░░░░ world We take care ░░░░░░░░ ourselves and we do ░░░░░░░░ as I said and ░░░░░░░░ give more to the ░░░░░░░░ government than we get ░░░░░░░░ And so making sure ░░░░░░░░ we adhere to the ░░░░░░░░ that so many people ░░░░░░░░ in the government should ░░░░░░░░ closest to the people ░░░░░░░░ s why home rule ░░░░░░░░ important to us.”
