Gov. Pritzker, in State of State Speech, Compares Trump Admin. To the Start of a Nazi Movement

PRITZKER I have been ░░░░░░░░ these last four weeks ░░░░░░░░ two important parts of ░░░░░░░░ life my work helping ░░░░░░░░ build the Illinois Holocaust ░░░░░░░░ and the two times ░░░░░░░░ I have had the ░░░░░░░░ of reciting the oath ░░░░░░░░ office for Illinois governor ░░░░░░░░ some of you know ░░░░░░░░ Illinois once had one ░░░░░░░░ the largest populations of ░░░░░░░░ survivors anywhere in the ░░░░░░░░ In 1978 Nazis decided ░░░░░░░░ they wanted to March ░░░░░░░░ The leaders of that ░░░░░░░░ knew that the images ░░░░░░░░ swastika clad young men ░░░░░░░░ stepping down a peaceful ░░░░░░░░ street would terrorize the ░░░░░░░░ Jewish population so many ░░░░░░░░ whom had never recovered ░░░░░░░░ their time in German ░░░░░░░░ camps The prospect of ░░░░░░░░ March sparked a legal ░░░░░░░░ that went all the ░░░░░░░░ to the Supreme Court ░░░░░░░░ was a Jewish lawyer ░░░░░░░░ the ACLU who argued ░░░░░░░░ case for the Nazis ░░░░░░░░ that even the most ░░░░░░░░ of speech was protected ░░░░░░░░ the First Amendment As ░░░░░░░░ American and as a ░░░░░░░░ I find it difficult ░░░░░░░░ resolve my feelings around ░░░░░░░░ Supreme Court case but ░░░░░░░░ am grateful that the ░░░░░░░░ of Nazis marching in ░░░░░░░░ street spurred the survivors ░░░░░░░░ other Skokie residents to ░░░░░░░░ They joined together to ░░░░░░░░ the Holocaust Memorial Foundation ░░░░░░░░ built the first Illinois ░░░░░░░░ Museum in a storefront ░░░░░░░░ 1981 a small but ░░░░░░░░ forerunner to the one ░░░░░░░░ helped to build 30 ░░░░░░░░ later here I do ░░░░░░░░ invoke the specter of ░░░░░░░░ lightly but I know ░░░░░░░░ history intimately and have ░░░░░░░░ more time than probably ░░░░░░░░ in this room with ░░░░░░░░ who survived the Holocaust ░░░░░░░░ is what I have ░░░░░░░░ The root the tears ░░░░░░░░ your house s foundation ░░░░░░░░ as a seed a ░░░░░░░░ of distrust and hate ░░░░░░░░ blame A seed that ░░░░░░░░ into a dictatorship in ░░░░░░░░ a lifetime ago did ░░░░░░░░ arrive overnight it started ░░░░░░░░ everyday Germans mad about ░░░░░░░░ and looking for someone ░░░░░░░░ blame I am watching ░░░░░░░░ a foreboding dread what ░░░░░░░░ happening in our country ░░░░░░░░ now A president who ░░░░░░░░ a plane go down ░░░░░░░░ the Potomac and suggests ░░░░░░░░ facts or findings that ░░░░░░░░ diversity hire is responsible ░░░░░░░░ the crash or the ░░░░░░░░ attorney general who just ░░░░░░░░ Starbucks arguing that customers ░░░░░░░░ higher prices for their ░░░░░░░░ because the baristas are ░░░░░░░░ female and nonwhite The ░░░░░░░░ playbook is laid bare ░░░░░░░░ They point to a ░░░░░░░░ of people who don ░░░░░░░░ look like you and ░░░░░░░░ you to blame them ░░░░░░░░ your problems I just ░░░░░░░░ one question What comes ░░░░░░░░ After we have discriminated ░░░░░░░░ deported or disparaged all ░░░░░░░░ immigrants and the gay ░░░░░░░░ lesbian transgender people the ░░░░░░░░ disabled the women and ░░░░░░░░ minorities once we have ░░░░░░░░ our neighbors and betrayed ░░░░░░░░ friends after that when ░░░░░░░░ problems we started with ░░░░░░░░ still there staring us ░░░░░░░░ the face what comes ░░░░░░░░ All the atrocities of ░░░░░░░░ history lurk in the ░░░░░░░░ to that question And ░░░░░░░░ we don t want ░░░░░░░░ repeat history then for ░░░░░░░░ sakes in this moment ░░░░░░░░ better be strong enough ░░░░░░░░ learn from it!”
