SORKIN Mr Secretary let ░░░░░░░░ ask you a strategic ░░░░░░░░ So we have heard ░░░░░░░░ President Elect Trump some ░░░░░░░░ loud and specific rhetoric ░░░░░░░░ at Mexico the leaders ░░░░░░░░ Mexico aimed at the ░░░░░░░░ of Canada about the ░░░░░░░░ that he believes they ░░░░░░░░ be implementing to help ░░░░░░░░ United States prevent illegal ░░░░░░░░ My question to you ░░░░░░░░ how much of the ░░░░░░░░ lies with Mexico or ░░░░░░░░ with Canada how much ░░░░░░░░ it lies with what ░░░░░░░░ re doing on our ░░░░░░░░ If you were to ░░░░░░░░ a pie chart and ░░░░░░░░ of assign effectively responsibilities ░░░░░░░░ these things because I ░░░░░░░░ there s a real ░░░░░░░░ of how much it ░░░░░░░░ going to ultimately cost ░░░░░░░░ and what kind of ░░░░░░░░ we need to put ░░░░░░░░ place to make all ░░░░░░░░ this happen Mayorkas It ░░░░░░░░ a really important question ░░░░░░░░ I think every country ░░░░░░░░ a significant role to ░░░░░░░░ in managing migration It ░░░░░░░░ not up to one ░░░░░░░░ And I have said ░░░░░░░░ for many a year ░░░░░░░░ if our border is ░░░░░░░░ first line of defense ░░░░░░░░ is too late And ░░░░░░░░ me share with you ░░░░░░░░ very powerful example of ░░░░░░░░ In December of 2023 ░░░░░░░░ experienced the highest level ░░░░░░░░ encounters of any one ░░░░░░░░ I think potentially in ░░░░░░░░ history and certainly in ░░░░░░░░ past 20 years What ░░░░░░░░ in December was that ░░░░░░░░ Mexican enforcement agency was ░░░░░░░░ and so there was ░░░░░░░░ interdiction effort and we ░░░░░░░░ trains coming to the ░░░░░░░░ carrying thousands of individuals ░░░░░░░░ may recall that President ░░░░░░░░ then spoke with President ░░░░░░░░ Obrador at that time ░░░░░░░░ then dispatched Secretary Blinken ░░░░░░░░ me to Mexico to ░░░░░░░░ what the problem was ░░░░░░░░ what we needed Mexico ░░░░░░░░ do in partnership with ░░░░░░░░ President Lopez Obrador took ░░░░░░░░ refunded the enforcement agency ░░░░░░░░ in January the numbers ░░░░░░░░ That s an example ░░░░░░░░ the importance of interdiction ░░░░░░░░ another country enforcing its ░░░░░░░░ before individuals arrive at ░░░░░░░░ border So it is ░░░░░░░░ shared responsibility.”
