Jayapal Calls Laken Riley Act a ‘Highway to Mass Deportation’

CAPEHART Congresswoman Jayapal welcome ░░░░░░░░ to The Sunday Show ░░░░░░░░ explain to everyone why ░░░░░░░░ s in this bill ░░░░░░░░ how damaging could it ░░░░░░░░ Jayapal Well Jonathan it ░░░░░░░░ great to see you ░░░░░░░░ for having me on ░░░░░░░░ I think the first ░░░░░░░░ to know is that ░░░░░░░░ an undocumented immigrant commits ░░░░░░░░ horrendous act of murder ░░░░░░░░ what happened to Laken ░░░░░░░░ that person is immediately ░░░░░░░░ detained and deported If ░░░░░░░░ re convicted of that ░░░░░░░░ what this bill does ░░░░░░░░ you said is that ░░░░░░░░ expands that to shoplifting ░░░░░░░░ theft and it says ░░░░░░░░ there is no due ░░░░░░░░ So let me give ░░░░░░░░ an example A shopkeeper ░░░░░░░░ t like the way ░░░░░░░░ looks when they walk ░░░░░░░░ the store They accuse ░░░░░░░░ person of shoplifting That ░░░░░░░░ is immediately arrested by ░░░░░░░░ police and immediately turned ░░░░░░░░ and mandatorily detained by ░░░░░░░░ the criminal justice system ░░░░░░░░ person has not had ░░░░░░░░ trial There is no ░░░░░░░░ that that person actually ░░░░░░░░ the crime that they ░░░░░░░░ accused of and yet ░░░░░░░░ are mandatorily detained So ░░░░░░░░ way I like to ░░░░░░░░ about this is that ░░░░░░░░ is essentially a highway ░░░░░░░░ mass deportation and you ░░░░░░░░ have any number of ░░░░░░░░ picked up and put ░░░░░░░░ the criminal justice system ░░░░░░░░ for being accused with ░░░░░░░░ conviction no admission of ░░░░░░░░ Right now if you ░░░░░░░░ picked up on shoplifting ░░░░░░░░ theft and you are ░░░░░░░░ convicted of that you ░░░░░░░░ mandatorily detained If you ░░░░░░░░ picked up and you ░░░░░░░░ to the crime you ░░░░░░░░ mandatorily detained This says ░░░░░░░░ can just be accused ░░░░░░░░ so it is really ░░░░░░░░ massive overstretch it is ░░░░░░░░ real problem and it ░░░░░░░░ the way that Republicans ░░░░░░░░ trying to expand the ░░░░░░░░ that you can put ░░░░░░░░ undocumented immigrant into the ░░░░░░░░ justice system without even ░░░░░░░░ conviction.”
