‘A Really Emotional Experience’: MSNBC’s Katy Tur Visits Her First Childhood Home Destroyed by California Wildfires

Tur This has been ░░░░░░░░ really emotional experience coming ░░░░░░░░ here to the Pacific ░░░░░░░░ especially walking into a ░░░░░░░░ that I grew up ░░░░░░░░ born and raised in ░░░░░░░░ to find that there ░░░░░░░░ nothing left We re ░░░░░░░░ a lot about the ░░░░░░░░ that are still raging ░░░░░░░░ again the Palisades fire ░░░░░░░░ still zero percent contained ░░░░░░░░ are still hot spots ░░░░░░░░ this community there are ░░░░░░░░ fires raging throughout the ░░░░░░░░ fires that firefighters are ░░░░░░░░ worried about if the ░░░░░░░░ do start to pick ░░░░░░░░ again as they are ░░░░░░░░ to do But again ░░░░░░░░ around here even if ░░░░░░░░ fires were able to ░░░░░░░░ it to much of ░░░░░░░░ Palisades there would be ░░░░░░░░ left to burn A ░░░░░░░░ bit earlier I was ░░░░░░░░ to do a bit ░░░░░░░░ a walkaround with my ░░░░░░░░ Jacob Soboroff who also ░░░░░░░░ up here going back ░░░░░░░░ some of the places ░░░░░░░░ we knew well including ░░░░░░░░ first childhood home Watch ░░░░░░░░ starts SOBOROFF Was that ░░░░░░░░ front door Tur Yeah ░░░░░░░░ this was the this ░░░░░░░░ the living room We ░░░░░░░░ a Christmas tree in ░░░░░░░░ corner right here And ░░░░░░░░ that was a bathroom ░░░░░░░░ my dad set up ░░░░░░░░ dark room for me ░░░░░░░░ because I love photography ░░░░░░░░ he loved it and ░░░░░░░░ wanted to teach me ░░░░░░░░ to how to take ░░░░░░░░ and how to develop ░░░░░░░░ We used to have ░░░░░░░░ back here There was ░░░░░░░░ little they made a ░░░░░░░░ koi pond weirdly in ░░░░░░░░ backyard I think they ░░░░░░░░ a little bit of ░░░░░░░░ structure When I was ░░░░░░░░ kid I would get ░░░░░░░░ mad when my parents ░░░░░░░░ t let me have ░░░░░░░░ way Shock SOBOROFF What ░░░░░░░░ surprise Tur And at ░░░░░░░░ point I hid this ░░░░░░░░ so much smaller I ░░░░░░░░ in this I hid ░░░░░░░░ here It must have ░░░░░░░░ behind something for hours ░░░░░░░░ Like they were bushes ░░░░░░░░ or something Tur My ░░░░░░░░ called the fire department ░░░░░░░░ Wait this was inside ░░░░░░░░ My parents called the ░░░░░░░░ department looking for me ░░░░░░░░ I just sat there ░░░░░░░░ I was so mad ░░░░░░░░ them SOBOROFF Did they ░░░░░░░░ Tur Yeah There was ░░░░░░░░ there was a there ░░░░░░░░ an APB out for ░░░░░░░░ little girl SOBOROFF Literally ░░░░░░░░ fire station is around ░░░░░░░░ corner Tur And the ░░░░░░░░ SOBOROFF Isn t that ░░░░░░░░ how just kind of ░░░░░░░░ comes back right Tur ░░░░░░░░ looks like it s ░░░░░░░░ same stove SOBOROFF That ░░░░░░░░ what I m saying ░░░░░░░░ ends Tur It does ░░░░░░░░ come back and it ░░░░░░░░ weird to see all ░░░░░░░░ your memories the structures ░░░░░░░░ scaffold your memories all ░░░░░░░░ them gone And you ░░░░░░░░ only imagine what it ░░░░░░░░ like for somebody who ░░░░░░░░ lives here waking up ░░░░░░░░ and getting in here ░░░░░░░░ we ve seen some ░░░░░░░░ people who were able ░░░░░░░░ get past the police ░░░░░░░░ going back to their ░░░░░░░░ and finding that there ░░░░░░░░ absolutely nothing left It ░░░░░░░░ just been devastating.”
