Richard Haass: American Democracy Still Faces an ‘Uncertain Future’

BRZEZINSKI There are two ░░░░░░░░ of looking at this ░░░░░░░░ Richard Haass and two ░░░░░░░░ of the country that ░░░░░░░░ making decisions on it ░░░░░░░░ completely don t line ░░░░░░░░ with facts Your thoughts ░░░░░░░░ What it shows Mika ░░░░░░░░ that American democracy as ░░░░░░░░ close in on our ░░░░░░░░ anniversary we re still ░░░░░░░░ work in progress and ░░░░░░░░ re still vulnerable I ░░░░░░░░ just think what would ░░░░░░░░ happened the last two ░░░░░░░░ months if Kamala Harris ░░░░░░░░ won a close electoral ░░░░░░░░ It would have been ░░░░░░░░ in the courts It ░░░░░░░░ have been challenged in ░░░░░░░░ streets It would have ░░░░░░░░ challenged in state legislatures ░░░░░░░░ before January 6th this ░░░░░░░░ around It s not ░░░░░░░░ to me what this ░░░░░░░░ would have gone through ░░░░░░░░ escaped it only because ░░░░░░░░ side in the Republicans ░░░░░░░░ have challenged in some ░░░░░░░░ the rule of law ░░░░░░░░ out victorious But we ░░░░░░░░ t assume the fact ░░░░░░░░ this January 6th is ░░░░░░░░ to be orderly and ░░░░░░░░ that we re out ░░░░░░░░ the woods We re ░░░░░░░░ And what this says ░░░░░░░░ me is we ve ░░░░░░░░ to double down on ░░░░░░░░ lessons of what happened ░░░░░░░░ need to not take ░░░░░░░░ granted that American democracy ░░░░░░░░ here to stay We ░░░░░░░░ to teach it to ░░░░░░░░ young people Civics needs ░░░░░░░░ become a staple of ░░░░░░░░ education in middle schools ░░░░░░░░ schools and colleges BRZEZINSKI ░░░░░░░░ would add to that ░░░░░░░░ service HAASS That s ░░░░░░░░ second thing I would ░░░░░░░░ begin with civics but ░░░░░░░░ one should be able ░░░░░░░░ get a degree in ░░░░░░░░ country without being familiarized ░░░░░░░░ read the documents read ░░░░░░░░ of the history Public ░░░░░░░░ ought to become mainstreamed ░░░░░░░░ this country to bring ░░░░░░░░ together who are now ░░░░░░░░ in totally red or ░░░░░░░░ blue counties or states ░░░░░░░░ ought to teach people ░░░░░░░░ to navigate the information ░░░░░░░░ because conspiracies and alternative ░░░░░░░░ there s no place ░░░░░░░░ them in a functioning ░░░░░░░░ So the lesson I ░░░░░░░░ from this is yeah ░░░░░░░░ got through January 6th ░░░░░░░░ years ago Yeah this ░░░░░░░░ we didn t have ░░░░░░░░ major problem because of ░░░░░░░░ outcome But we shouldn ░░░░░░░░ get comfortable American democracy ░░░░░░░░ faces I would argue ░░░░░░░░ uncertain future and that ░░░░░░░░ the lesson we ought ░░░░░░░░ derive from what we ░░░░░░░░ talking about today.”
