MATTINGLY You interviewed him ░░░░░░░░ number of times I ░░░░░░░░ to play something from ░░░░░░░░ 2021 interview with him ░░░░░░░░ a listen Clip starts ░░░░░░░░ As you think back ░░░░░░░░ your presidency and and ░░░░░░░░ time as as a ░░░░░░░░ a former president what ░░░░░░░░ you most proud of ░░░░░░░░ Well we re very ░░░░░░░░ of having been elected ░░░░░░░░ having served as president ░░░░░░░░ s the epitome of ░░░░░░░░ lives I think in ░░░░░░░░ And I would say ░░░░░░░░ we did what we ░░░░░░░░ to do in the ░░░░░░░░ We kept the peace ░░░░░░░░ we obeyed the law ░░░░░░░░ we told the truth ░░░░░░░░ we honored human rights ░░░░░░░░ were the things that ░░░░░░░░ important to me Clip ░░░░░░░░ MATTINGLY Judy there s ░░░░░░░░ much discussion rightfully so ░░░░░░░░ his post presidential legacy ░░░░░░░░ there s also been ░░░░░░░░ evolution in how people ░░░░░░░░ his four years in ░░░░░░░░ Can you kind of ░░░░░░░░ that what you saw ░░░░░░░░ whether your views have ░░░░░░░░ on it WOODRUFF I ░░░░░░░░ that s right Phil ░░░░░░░░ the time we were ░░░░░░░░ with the politics of ░░░░░░░░ moment The country was ░░░░░░░░ with inflation high price ░░░░░░░░ gasoline and then of ░░░░░░░░ the last year of ░░░░░░░░ presidency was consumed with ░░░░░░░░ Iran hostage crisis He ░░░░░░░░ never able to get ░░░░░░░░ hostages American hostages home ░░░░░░░░ Ronald Reagan had just ░░░░░░░░ had just taken office ░░░░░░░░ those were the things ░░░░░░░░ consumed us then but ░░░░░░░░ the years since there ░░░░░░░░ clearly been a reappraisal ░░░░░░░░ reminder that the Camp ░░░░░░░░ Accords the peace agreement ░░░░░░░░ Israel and Egypt which ░░░░░░░░ Carter was determined was ░░░░░░░░ to happen It took ░░░░░░░░ 13 days at Camp ░░░░░░░░ but he was the ░░░░░░░░ behind that that peace ░░░░░░░░ that lives to this ░░░░░░░░ The Panama Canal treaties ░░░░░░░░ enormous achievement during his ░░░░░░░░ The fact that he ░░░░░░░░ human rights on the ░░░░░░░░ the appointment of Paul ░░░░░░░░ to be the chairman ░░░░░░░░ the Federal Reserve someone ░░░░░░░░ by the way went ░░░░░░░░ to raise interest rates ░░░░░░░░ fight inflation which hurt ░░░░░░░░ Carter politically but Carter ░░░░░░░░ what he thought was ░░░░░░░░ for the economy So ░░░░░░░░ there is a new ░░░░░░░░ today of of what ░░░░░░░░ was able to excuse ░░░░░░░░ accomplish as president as ░░░░░░░░ as the enormous achievements ░░░░░░░░ his post presidency MATTINGLY ░░░░░░░░ read that you said ░░░░░░░░ about President Carter I ░░░░░░░░ him almost will his ░░░░░░░░ to make a difference ░░░░░░░░ this world What do ░░░░░░░░ mean by that WOODRUFF ░░░░░░░░ deep inside Jimmy Carter ░░░░░░░░ grew up on a ░░░░░░░░ farm his father ran ░░░░░░░░ pretty successful peanut business ░░░░░░░░ it was very hands ░░░░░░░░ Jimmy Carter worked in ░░░░░░░░ fields worked in the ░░░░░░░░ the plant where they ░░░░░░░░ the peanuts He did ░░░░░░░░ labor He grew up ░░░░░░░░ a very you could ░░░░░░░░ not just rural but ░░░░░░░░ very simple manual labor ░░░░░░░░ environment and yet he ░░░░░░░░ always a good student ░░░░░░░░ went to the Naval ░░░░░░░░ Somewhere inside of him ░░░░░░░░ a fierce drive to ░░░░░░░░ a difference in the ░░░░░░░░ to to look after ░░░░░░░░ people who couldn t ░░░░░░░░ after themselves to care ░░░░░░░░ the weakest among us ░░░░░░░░ that of course is ░░░░░░░░ we know his post ░░░░░░░░ for They the Carter ░░░░░░░░ based in Atlanta has ░░░░░░░░ on I believe it ░░░░░░░░ 40 or 60 countries ░░░░░░░░ poorest countries in the ░░░░░░░░ That s where their ░░░░░░░░ have been focused and ░░░░░░░░ goes right to the ░░░░░░░░ of what Jimmy Carter ░░░░░░░░ that it it it ░░░░░░░░ our responsibility to love ░░░░░░░░ His faith was incredibly ░░░░░░░░ to him and his ░░░░░░░░ told him that that ░░░░░░░░ was his obligation to ░░░░░░░░ what he could for ░░░░░░░░ And that that to ░░░░░░░░ is what drove him ░░░░░░░░ than anything But it ░░░░░░░░ a will like I ░░░░░░░░ don t I can ░░░░░░░░ think of anyone else ░░░░░░░░ ve covered in American ░░░░░░░░ with as fierce a ░░░░░░░░ as Jimmy Carter had ░░░░░░░░ Judy Woodruff not only ░░░░░░░░ you used to sit ░░░░░░░░ this chair but you ░░░░░░░░ also been very kind ░░░░░░░░ me personally over the ░░░░░░░░ and so many of ░░░░░░░░ as well Thank you ░░░░░░░░ much for sharing your ░░░░░░░░ over decades of covering ░░░░░░░░ Jimmy Carter WOODRUFF Very ░░░░░░░░ to be with you ░░░░░░░░
