Dem Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan Launches His Independent Campaign for Governor

DUGGAN Nearly 12 years ░░░░░░░░ I campaigned for mayor ░░░░░░░░ Detroit by spending time ░░░░░░░░ living rooms like this ░░░░░░░░ then the us versus ░░░░░░░░ politics were tearing the ░░░░░░░░ apart The politicians who ░░░░░░░░ supposed to be leading ░░░░░░░░ their time fighting each ░░░░░░░░ as the city of ░░░░░░░░ headed toward bankruptcy More ░░░░░░░░ 1 000 people a ░░░░░░░░ were moving out and ░░░░░░░░ left behind faced city ░░░░░░░░ that were nonexistent living ░░░░░░░░ neighborhoods becoming more abandoned ░░░░░░░░ more dangerous by the ░░░░░░░░ Night after night I ░░░░░░░░ in homes talking to ░░░░░░░░ who felt ignored and ░░░░░░░░ at city government I ░░░░░░░░ 250 of these house ░░░░░░░░ and promised that if ░░░░░░░░ put people first not ░░░░░░░░ we could start to ░░░░░░░░ the city we wanted ░░░░░░░░ give our children the ░░░░░░░░ they deserve From day ░░░░░░░░ as mayor I put ░░░░░░░░ stop to the fights ░░░░░░░░ the suburbs the feuds ░░░░░░░░ the unions the attacks ░░░░░░░░ the business community and ░░░░░░░░ endless battles with city ░░░░░░░░ I went to Lansing ░░░░░░░░ built relationships with Democrats ░░░░░░░░ Republicans We took our ░░░░░░░░ through the darkness the ░░░░░░░░ out streetlights and we ░░░░░░░░ the entire city to ░░░░░░░░ national standard We recruited ░░░░░░░░ new employers to Detroit ░░░░░░░░ new auto plants opened ░░░░░░░░ of small businesses and ░░░░░░░░ Detroit s unemployment rate ░░░░░░░░ its lowest rate in ░░░░░░░░ than 30 years Clip ░░░░░░░░ Reporter First time since ░░░░░░░░ the unemployment rate has ░░░░░░░░ below 7 percent Clip ░░░░░░░░ DUGGAN We cut blight ░░░░░░░░ our city We re ░░░░░░░░ thousands of abandoned houses ░░░░░░░░ buildings and in their ░░░░░░░░ we built beauty new ░░░░░░░░ new streetscapes 1 billion ░░░░░░░░ new affordable housing and ░░░░░░░░ entirely new Detroit Riverfront ░░░░░░░░ result For the first ░░░░░░░░ since 1957 Detroit s ░░░░░░░░ is growing again But ░░░░░░░░ was always keenly aware ░░░░░░░░ approach didn t fit ░░░░░░░░ inside the dogma of ░░░░░░░░ of the two political ░░░░░░░░ We re building a ░░░░░░░░ where everyone has value ░░░░░░░░ I fought hard for ░░░░░░░░ rights reproductive rights and ░░░░░░░░ for our LGBTQ community ░░░░░░░░ when the calls mounted ░░░░░░░░ defund the police I ░░░░░░░░ some in my own ░░░░░░░░ by giving Detroit police ░░░░░░░░ a well deserved 10 ░░░░░░░░ raise and putting 300 ░░░░░░░░ officers on the street ░░░░░░░░ know results We ve ░░░░░░░░ shootings and carjackings by ░░░░░░░░ to 50 percent and ░░░░░░░░ year Detroit saw its ░░░░░░░░ homicides since 1966 The ░░░░░░░░ fighting and the nonsense ░░░░░░░░ once held Detroit back ░░░░░░░░ too often what we ░░░░░░░░ seeing in Michigan today ░░░░░░░░ current system forces people ░░░░░░░░ choose sides not find ░░░░░░░░ I want to see ░░░░░░░░ I can change that ░░░░░░░░ starting a campaign for ░░░░░░░░ by having a conversation ░░░░░░░░ whether it s time ░░░░░░░░ a whole new approach ░░░░░░░░ governor who s an ░░░░░░░░ What would happen if ░░░░░░░░ upended the system and ░░░░░░░░ Michigan voters a new ░░░░░░░░ A governor who didn ░░░░░░░░ run as a candidate ░░░░░░░░ either party but went ░░░░░░░░ work every day with ░░░░░░░░ goal except to get ░░░░░░░░ to work together for ░░░░░░░░ of Michigan As I ░░░░░░░░ 12 years ago this ░░░░░░░░ will start by finding ░░░░░░░░ what you think by ░░░░░░░░ to every corner of ░░░░░░░░ I m looking forward ░░░░░░░░ sitting in living rooms ░░░░░░░░ Detroit to Alpena to ░░░░░░░░ to Ishpeming We face ░░░░░░░░ that touch the lives ░░░░░░░░ every community I believe ░░░░░░░░ s biggest export is ░░░░░░░░ longer our automobiles it ░░░░░░░░ our young people Our ░░░░░░░░ people are moving out ░░░░░░░░ Michigan at a rate ░░░░░░░░ today than any state ░░░░░░░░ America And it will ░░░░░░░░ real change to build ░░░░░░░░ economy with real opportunities ░░░░░░░░ don t believe our ░░░░░░░░ are doing nearly enough ░░░░░░░░ prepare our children to ░░░░░░░░ We need to put ░░░░░░░░ resources in all our ░░░░░░░░ systems in Michigan and ░░░░░░░░ real improvement in a ░░░░░░░░ that respects the voice ░░░░░░░░ parents in their children ░░░░░░░░ education I m not ░░░░░░░░ to be the Democrats ░░░░░░░░ or the Republicans governor ░░░░░░░░ m running to be ░░░░░░░░ governor So if you ░░░░░░░░ your neighbors are tired ░░░░░░░░ the politics of conflict ░░░░░░░░ want to have a ░░░░░░░░ conversation about real change ░░░░░░░░ invite me to your ░░░░░░░░ It s a big ░░░░░░░░ It ll take me ░░░░░░░░ to get everywhere but ░░░░░░░░ work really hard to ░░░░░░░░ to know you and ░░░░░░░░ problems and give you ░░░░░░░░ chance to get to ░░░░░░░░ me And just maybe ░░░░░░░░ we can build a ░░░░░░░░ kind of politics and ░░░░░░░░ a brighter future for ░░░░░░░░
