KERNEN Mr Secretary we ░░░░░░░░ the word recalibrate like ░░░░░░░░ times nine times from ░░░░░░░░ Powell I m just ░░░░░░░░ is it to say ░░░░░░░░ our designs on electrification ░░░░░░░░ the auto industry have ░░░░░░░░ recalibrated there And I ░░░░░░░░ just give you one ░░░░░░░░ and you can maybe ░░░░░░░░ can explain why but ░░░░░░░░ the Inflation Reduction Act ░░░░░░░░ 5 billion for building ░░░░░░░░ charging stations the latest ░░░░░░░░ eight have been built ░░░░░░░░ the 7 5 billion ░░░░░░░░ that had been allocated ░░░░░░░░ re supposed to get ░░░░░░░░ 500 000 of these ░░░░░░░░ stations by 2030 What ░░░░░░░░ really the problem with ░░░░░░░░ Do you have you ░░░░░░░░ at that and figured ░░░░░░░░ why Buttigieg Oh yeah ░░░░░░░░ know that s that ░░░░░░░░ on track So we ░░░░░░░░ at about 190 000 ░░░░░░░░ available charging stations in ░░░░░░░░ U S that s ░░░░░░░░ double what the level ░░░░░░░░ when President Biden came ░░░░░░░░ The issue though is ░░░░░░░░ there are some gaps ░░░░░░░░ the market ones that ░░░░░░░░ just not going to ░░░░░░░░ built by the private ░░░░░░░░ that s been building ░░░░░░░░ construction of those chargers ░░░░░░░░ date That s why ░░░░░░░░ legislation provided for funding ░░░░░░░░ do federally supported chargers ░░░░░░░░ are intended to be ░░░░░░░░ before 2030 Now the ░░░░░░░░ of that construction will ░░░░░░░░ in 27 28 quite ░░░░░░░░ bit actually I expect ░░░░░░░░ 2026 A handful as ░░░░░░░░ mentioned are actually already ░░░░░░░░ and running but really ░░░░░░░░ you re going to ░░░░░░░░ is more the second ░░░░░░░░ of this decade And ░░░░░░░░ s really important to ░░░░░░░░ those federally supported chargers ░░░░░░░░ you have stretches of ░░░░░░░░ or even just in ░░░░░░░░ middle of our cities ░░░░░░░░ buildings places in our ░░░░░░░░ where it just doesn ░░░░░░░░ yet pencil out for ░░░░░░░░ to be the private ░░░░░░░░ profitably doing that Even ░░░░░░░░ about 80 percent of ░░░░░░░░ charging happens at home ░░░░░░░░ reality is that the ░░░░░░░░ EV kind of landscape ░░░░░░░░ re working toward where ░░░░░░░░ president s goal is ░░░░░░░░ half of sales to ░░░░░░░░ EVs by the end ░░░░░░░░ this decade requires us ░░░░░░░░ the end of this ░░░░░░░░ to have a lot ░░░░░░░░ charging apparatus that just ░░░░░░░░ t there as we ░░░░░░░░ sitting here in 2024 ░░░░░░░░ Secretary Buttigieg thank you ░░░░░░░░ much for being with ░░░░░░░░ today We appreciate it ░░░░░░░░ Thank you.”
