GEIST We ve seen ░░░░░░░░ over the last several ░░░░░░░░ and we played on ░░░░░░░░ show Ronald Reagan s ░░░░░░░░ speech in January of ░░░░░░░░ where he stopped and ░░░░░░░░ deliberately took a moment ░░░░░░░░ talk about immigration and ░░░░░░░░ important it is to ░░░░░░░░ country and the beauty ░░░░░░░░ he saw it and ░░░░░░░░ coming to this country ░░░░░░░░ becoming Americans Boy what ░░░░░░░░ contrast obviously to Donald ░░░░░░░░ who began his political ░░░░░░░░ talking about murderers and ░░░░░░░░ flowing over the border ░░░░░░░░ chance of build that ░░░░░░░░ all that When did ░░░░░░░░ divide happen in the ░░░░░░░░ Party In other words ░░░░░░░░ did we get from ░░░░░░░░ speech and Ronald Reagan ░░░░░░░░ Donald Trump in 2015 ░░░░░░░░ 16 BOOT Well that ░░░░░░░░ Willie that is definitely ░░░░░░░░ of the biggest differences ░░░░░░░░ Reagan and Trump And ░░░░░░░░ fact that Reagan did ░░░░░░░░ I would argue a ░░░░░░░░ troubling record on civil ░░░░░░░░ because he was opposed ░░░░░░░░ civil rights legislation but ░░░░░░░░ was very positive on ░░░░░░░░ He was very pro ░░░░░░░░ throughout his career In ░░░░░░░░ you know in the ░░░░░░░░ campaign he was talking ░░░░░░░░ getting rid of the ░░░░░░░░ between the U S ░░░░░░░░ Mexico This was the ░░░░░░░░ of NAFTA You know ░░░░░░░░ 1986 He signed an ░░░░░░░░ bill that legalized millions ░░░░░░░░ undocumented immigrants what Republicans ░░░░░░░░ would call a quote ░░░░░░░░ amnesty bill And as ░░░░░░░░ mentioned in his farewell ░░░░░░░░ he gave a very ░░░░░░░░ tribute to the way ░░░░░░░░ Americans have built America ░░░░░░░░ built by immigrants So ░░░░░░░░ s a huge difference ░░░░░░░░ but I think there ░░░░░░░░ always an element of ░░░░░░░░ Republican Party that was ░░░░░░░░ uncomfortable with that There ░░░░░░░░ always that more nativist ░░░░░░░░ in the Republican Party ░░░░░░░░ I think it became ░░░░░░░░ pronounced over time You ░░░░░░░░ it in the in ░░░░░░░░ the early 2000s when ░░░░░░░░ McCain and other Republicans ░░░░░░░░ trying to get a ░░░░░░░░ immigration bill and remember ░░░░░░░░ little bit more than ░░░░░░░░ decade ago Marco Rubio ░░░░░░░░ others were in favor ░░░░░░░░ a balanced immigration bill ░░░░░░░░ included legalizing undocumented immigrants ░░░░░░░░ well as increasing border ░░░░░░░░ And that was blown ░░░░░░░░ by opposition from the ░░░░░░░░ right And basically now ░░░░░░░░ s the hard right ░░░░░░░░ far right the populist ░░░░░░░░ right that has taken ░░░░░░░░ the Republican Party.”
