An Inch Difference and He ‘Would’ve Been Dead’: McCormick on Trump’s Assassination Attempt

[Clip starts McCORMICK I ░░░░░░░░ in the front row ░░░░░░░░ and President Trump had ░░░░░░░░ announced me and said ░░░░░░░░ was going to have ░░░░░░░░ come up on the ░░░░░░░░ and said Well well ░░░░░░░░ a minute And then ░░░░░░░░ were a number of ░░░░░░░░ I think probably seven ░░░░░░░░ eight shots Clip ends ░░░░░░░░ That was Pennsylvania Republican ░░░░░░░░ nominee David McCormick who ░░░░░░░░ sitting behind Donald Trump ░░░░░░░░ the rally yesterday He ░░░░░░░░ us now Thank you ░░░░░░░░ joining us this morning ░░░░░░░░ McCormick Just expand on ░░░░░░░░ you were just saying ░░░░░░░░ Good morning STEPHANOPOULOS from ░░░░░░░░ night s special What ░░░░░░░░ you see happen What ░░░░░░░░ you hear When did ░░░░░░░░ realize what was going ░░░░░░░░ McCORMICK Well as as ░░░░░░░░ said I was sitting ░░░░░░░░ in the front row ░░░░░░░░ the shots went off ░░░░░░░░ it it was pretty ░░░░░░░░ quickly you know a ░░░░░░░░ rally it was very ░░░░░░░░ of upbeat energy it ░░░░░░░░ pretty clear quickly this ░░░░░░░░ a series of shots ░░░░░░░░ and the president went ░░░░░░░░ immediately and the Secret ░░░░░░░░ jumped on top of ░░░░░░░░ and and then he ░░░░░░░░ up and you saw ░░░░░░░░ pictures you re now ░░░░░░░░ on TV where his ░░░░░░░░ came out in sort ░░░░░░░░ a measure of I ░░░░░░░░ defiance and reassurance and ░░░░░░░░ know leadership He really ░░░░░░░░ people that he was ░░░░░░░░ But at the same ░░░░░░░░ over my shoulder it ░░░░░░░░ clear that someone else ░░░░░░░░ been hit And sadly ░░░░░░░░ innocent bystander was knocked ░░░░░░░░ and it was clear ░░░░░░░░ he was very very ░░░░░░░░ and bleeding very badly ░░░░░░░░ so there were sort ░░░░░░░░ two things going on ░░░░░░░░ the same time one ░░░░░░░░ my left and one ░░░░░░░░ my right And the ░░░░░░░░ was was you know ░░░░░░░░ off the stage and ░░░░░░░░ there was a real ░░░░░░░░ of what was going ░░░░░░░░ whether there were multiple ░░░░░░░░ whether the shooting was ░░░░░░░░ and really a a ░░░░░░░░ day The the president ░░░░░░░░ know an inch difference ░░░░░░░░ the president would have ░░░░░░░░ dead It was a ░░░░░░░░ scary moment STEPHANOPOULOS You ░░░░░░░░ been out campaigning for ░░░░░░░░ How have you experienced ░░░░░░░░ toxic environment that we ░░░░░░░░ just talking about with ░░░░░░░░ Cohen the counterterrorism specialist ░░░░░░░░ You know I mostly ░░░░░░░░ t to be honest ░░░░░░░░ you I mean obviously ░░░░░░░░ have two very conflicting ░░░░░░░░ of of where to ░░░░░░░░ the country the Democratic ░░░░░░░░ versus the Republican Party ░░░░░░░░ President Biden versus President ░░░░░░░░ And and so there ░░░░░░░░ a real conflict of ░░░░░░░░ But for the most ░░░░░░░░ I I don t ░░░░░░░░ extreme rhetoric and obviously ░░░░░░░░ rhetoric has no place ░░░░░░░░ politics And you know ░░░░░░░░ the father of six ░░░░░░░░ it s it s ░░░░░░░░ I spent my night ░░░░░░░░ to my daughters and ░░░░░░░░ them that their dad ░░░░░░░░ going to be okay ░░░░░░░░ though he s decided ░░░░░░░░ try to run for ░░░░░░░░ office and serve his ░░░░░░░░ So this is you ░░░░░░░░ this is something that ░░░░░░░░ unacceptable in in political ░░░░░░░░ and it s unacceptable ░░░░░░░░ it comes from And ░░░░░░░░ so we have to ░░░░░░░░ back on it And ░░░░░░░░ it s not hard ░░░░░░░░ imagine that some of ░░░░░░░░ extreme rhetoric we see ░░░░░░░░ to the attempt on ░░░░░░░░ Trump and you know ░░░░░░░░ Scalise and some of ░░░░░░░░ other horrible tragedies that ░░░░░░░░ Paul Pelosi This is ░░░░░░░░ in American political life ░░░░░░░░ we we need to ░░░░░░░░ together and agree on ░░░░░░░░ STEPHANOPOULOS Yeah and and ░░░░░░░░ your message is being ░░░░░░░░ It was echoed by ░░░░░░░░ Johnson this morning It ░░░░░░░░ echoed by President Biden ░░░░░░░░ President Trump said we ░░░░░░░░ to come together as ░░░░░░░░ But we ve also ░░░░░░░░ that several top Republicans ░░░░░░░░ also seeking to blame ░░░░░░░░ for this How do ░░░░░░░░ take the temperature down ░░░░░░░░ now McCORMICK Well I ░░░░░░░░ we first of all ░░░░░░░░ to recognize that we ░░░░░░░░ have a real conflict ░░░░░░░░ ideas That s okay ░░░░░░░░ know Our country is ░░░░░░░░ with very significant choices ░░░░░░░░ you know running for ░░░░░░░░ I believe that we ░░░░░░░░ going in the wrong ░░░░░░░░ And so I m ░░░░░░░░ the case as aggressively ░░░░░░░░ I can that that ░░░░░░░░ need to go in ░░░░░░░░ different direction That s ░░░░░░░░ than attacking people That ░░░░░░░░ different than breaking down ░░░░░░░░ That s different than ░░░░░░░░ violence And so we ░░░░░░░░ to embrace conflict conflict ░░░░░░░░ ideas conflict in the ░░░░░░░░ of our country that ░░░░░░░░ to be addressed at ░░░░░░░░ ballot box But we ░░░░░░░░ didn t we don ░░░░░░░░ need to resort and ░░░░░░░░ t resort to violence ░░░░░░░░ a way of promoting ░░░░░░░░ agendas And and I ░░░░░░░░ that certainly the environment ░░░░░░░░ I think to these ░░░░░░░░ of violence that we ░░░░░░░░ seeing not just last ░░░░░░░░ but others and it ░░░░░░░░ to be dialed back ░░░░░░░░ the board.”
