CBS News: Biden Administration Plans to Refer Some Migrants in Latin America for Resettlement in Greece and Italy

REISER CBS News has ░░░░░░░░ learned that the Biden ░░░░░░░░ is planning to refer ░░░░░░░░ migrants in Latin America ░░░░░░░░ resettlement in Greece and ░░░░░░░░ ZAK Yeah it s ░░░░░░░░ of the White House ░░░░░░░░ effort to discourage migrants ░░░░░░░░ crossing the U S ░░░░░░░░ border Now this initiative ░░░░░░░░ involve both countries welcoming ░░░░░░░░ who are processed at ░░░░░░░░ immigration centers in four ░░░░░░░░ American countries The offices ░░░░░░░░ created last year as ░░░░░░░░ of an effort to ░░░░░░░░ asylum seekers who hope ░░░░░░░░ reach the U S ░░░░░░░░ CBS News immigration and ░░░░░░░░ Reporter Camilo Montoya Galvez ░░░░░░░░ this story He s ░░░░░░░░ San Antonio Texas with ░░░░░░░░ So what more can ░░░░░░░░ tell us about this ░░░░░░░░ and how it s ░░░░░░░░ to work MONTOYA GALVEZ ░░░░░░░░ Lindsey and Lana That ░░░░░░░░ right the Biden Administration ░░░░░░░░ we speak is currently ░░░░░░░░ to refer some migrants ░░░░░░░░ the Latin America region ░░░░░░░░ be resettled in both ░░░░░░░░ and Greece as part ░░░░░░░░ this broader effort that ░░░░░░░░ mentioned to deter illegal ░░░░░░░░ along the U S ░░░░░░░░ border which as you ░░░░░░░░ have reached record levels ░░░░░░░░ the past three years ░░░░░░░░ year the Biden Administration ░░░░░░░░ these immigration processing centers ░░░░░░░░ four countries in Latin ░░░░░░░░ to screen migrants who ░░░░░░░░ to come to the ░░░░░░░░ S and since then ░░░░░░░░ has been processing thousands ░░░░░░░░ migrants who may be ░░░░░░░░ for refugee status or ░░░░░░░░ immigration benefits that allow ░░░░░░░░ to come to the ░░░░░░░░ S legally Importantly Canada ░░░░░░░░ Spain have also been ░░░░░░░░ some of the migrants ░░░░░░░░ are filing applications under ░░░░░░░░ initiative And now we ░░░░░░░░ learned of course that ░░░░░░░░ and Greece are also ░░░░░░░░ to join this multi ░░░░░░░░ initiative and also welcome ░░░░░░░░ migrants and workers to ░░░░░░░░ countries The idea here ░░░░░░░░ and Lana is to ░░░░░░░░ illegal immigration at the ░░░░░░░░ S Mexico border by ░░░░░░░░ would be migrants legal ░░░░░░░░ to come to the ░░░░░░░░ S and now other ░░░░░░░░ ZAK Camilo I have ░░░░░░░░ many questions about this ░░░░░░░░ maybe let s just ░░░░░░░░ through some of the ░░░░░░░░ about it How does ░░░░░░░░ Bind administration choose who ░░░░░░░░ going to be sent ░░░░░░░░ Greece or Italy Do ░░░░░░░░ does the U S ░░░░░░░░ pay for these migrants ░░░░░░░░ be sent there Tell ░░░░░░░░ more about how this ░░░░░░░░ this supposed to work ░░░░░░░░ GALVEZ These are all ░░░░░░░░ questions Lana There are ░░░░░░░░ of these immigration processing ░░░░░░░░ in four countries Colombia ░░░░░░░░ Costa Rica and Guatemala ░░░░░░░░ four countries have agreed ░░░░░░░░ process some of these ░░░░░░░░ who would be referred ░░░░░░░░ either the U S ░░░░░░░░ these countries that we ░░░░░░░░ Spain Canada and now ░░░░░░░░ and Greece United Nations ░░░░░░░░ and others are helping ░░░░░░░░ U S to screen ░░░░░░░░ migrants traveling throughout the ░░░░░░░░ particularly in these four ░░░░░░░░ and who are eligible ░░░░░░░░ come to different countries ░░░░░░░░ they can be vetted ░░░░░░░░ and then they can ░░░░░░░░ a flight to their ░░░░░░░░ destinations Not everyone qualifies ░░░░░░░░ example in Guatemala only ░░░░░░░░ migrants can apply for ░░░░░░░░ initiative in Costa Rica ░░░░░░░░ Venezuelan and Nicaraguan migrants ░░░░░░░░ apply And in Ecuador ░░░░░░░░ Cubans Haitians Colombians and ░░░░░░░░ can apply for this ░░░░░░░░ So there are restrictions ░░░░░░░░ it is a U ░░░░░░░░ funded and driven initiative ░░░░░░░░ so the U S ░░░░░░░░ be subsidizing the transportation ░░░░░░░░ the processing of these ░░░░░░░░ because again from the ░░░░░░░░ S perspective the goal ░░░░░░░░ is to divert people ░░░░░░░░ from the U S ░░░░░░░░ and to other countries ░░░░░░░░ to the U S ░░░░░░░░ in a legal fashion ░░░░░░░░ Why would Italy and ░░░░░░░░ join the effort MONTOYA ░░░░░░░░ Excellent question Obviously Italy ░░░░░░░░ Greece have faced migration ░░░░░░░░ of their own with ░░░░░░░░ numbers of migrants from ░░░░░░░░ and the Middle East ░░░░░░░░ to their countries over ░░░░░░░░ past 10 years or ░░░░░░░░ Obviously after the Syrian ░░░░░░░░ crisis Turkey Greece and ░░░░░░░░ countries in Europe and ░░░░░░░░ face a massive influx ░░░░░░░░ refugees But both countries ░░░░░░░░ and Italy for that ░░░░░░░░ are in many ways ░░░░░░░░ countries because most migrants ░░░░░░░░ there do not stay ░░░░░░░░ They re wanting to ░░░░░░░░ in other European countries ░░░░░░░░ they re right now ░░░░░░░░ significant labor shortages and ░░░░░░░░ populations And so there ░░░░░░░░ an incentive in both ░░░░░░░░ and Greece to attract ░░░░░░░░ welcome foreign workers So ░░░░░░░░ U S essentially would ░░░░░░░░ able to relieve pressure ░░░░░░░░ the border and Italy ░░░░░░░░ Greece would get foreign ░░░░░░░░ and a legal migration ░░░░░░░░ ZAK Alright interesting Camilo ░░░░░░░░ Galvez breaking that news ░░░░░░░░ us.
