SF Mayor London Breed: Target Store Closures Might Be in Part Because of AI, Not Crime Necessarily

PHILLIP One of the ░░░░░░░░ just in the last ░░░░░░░░ of days you ve ░░░░░░░░ about is requiring drug ░░░░░░░░ for welfare recipients in ░░░░░░░░ city as San Francisco ░░░░░░░░ a fentanyl epidemic also ░░░░░░░░ some serious crime issues ░░░░░░░░ you think that your ░░░░░░░░ the Democratic Party has ░░░░░░░░ too lenient on this ░░░░░░░░ of crime And are ░░░░░░░░ trying to show some ░░░░░░░░ here by pushing back ░░░░░░░░ what some in your ░░░░░░░░ might think is the ░░░░░░░░ approach to dealing with ░░░░░░░░ issues BREED Well I ░░░░░░░░ say that many of ░░░░░░░░ decisions that I make ░░░░░░░░ mayor aren t really ░░░░░░░░ my party They re ░░░░░░░░ about my personal experiences ░░░░░░░░ well as my desire ░░░░░░░░ see my city safe ░░░░░░░░ people know that I ░░░░░░░░ lost a sister to ░░░░░░░░ drug overdose I grew ░░░░░░░░ in the crack epidemic ░░░░░░░░ public housing where you ░░░░░░░░ drug use and the ░░░░░░░░ was all around me ░░░░░░░░ losing friends and loved ░░░░░░░░ to drugs and to ░░░░░░░░ criminal justice system was ░░░░░░░░ normal part of my ░░░░░░░░ And part of my ░░░░░░░░ is really coming from ░░░░░░░░ who were formerly incarcerated ░░░░░░░░ who continue to call ░░░░░░░░ former addicts from the ░░░░░░░░ that they re doing ░░░░░░░░ just the challenges they ░░░░░░░░ in their life in ░░░░░░░░ past and the need ░░░░░░░░ us as a city ░░░░░░░░ I can only speak ░░░░░░░░ San Francisco and my ░░░░░░░░ there but as a ░░░░░░░░ how we have been ░░░░░░░░ too lenient how we ░░░░░░░░ to make sure that ░░░░░░░░ are held accountable And ░░░░░░░░ be clear my goal ░░░░░░░░ this is to require ░░░░░░░░ sobriety It s to ░░░░░░░░ that you are a ░░░░░░░░ of a treatment program ░░░░░░░░ we can do under ░░░░░░░░ state law And I ░░░░░░░░ that whatever we have ░░░░░░░░ to us we need ░░░░░░░░ use it Fentanyl and ░░░░░░░░ it s doing in ░░░░░░░░ of the number of ░░░░░░░░ we had more deaths ░░░░░░░░ fentanyl overdoses than we ░░░░░░░░ during the Covid pandemic ░░░░░░░░ we shut the entire ░░░░░░░░ down to deal with ░░░░░░░░ And this fentanyl crisis ░░░░░░░░ is not just happening ░░░░░░░░ San Francisco it s ░░░░░░░░ all over the country ░░░░░░░░ have to start taking ░░░░░░░░ aggressive steps It s ░░░░░░░░ a Democratic issue it ░░░░░░░░ not a Republican issue ░░░░░░░░ s really the desire ░░░░░░░░ do everything we can ░░░░░░░░ try and address substance ░░░░░░░░ disorder in this city ░░░░░░░░ in this country PHILLIP ░░░░░░░░ real quick before you ░░░░░░░░ as you know Target ░░░░░░░░ decided to close a ░░░░░░░░ of stores in the ░░░░░░░░ of San Francisco What ░░░░░░░░ your reaction to that ░░░░░░░░ Well I would just ░░░░░░░░ that I understand that ░░░░░░░░ s a challenge with ░░░░░░░░ is happening around retail ░░░░░░░░ retail theft not just ░░░░░░░░ in California but all ░░░░░░░░ the country and especially ░░░░░░░░ lot of major cities ░░░░░░░░ unfortunately the highlight of ░░░░░░░░ happens to be mostly ░░░░░░░░ San Francisco Things are ░░░░░░░░ San Francisco is still ░░░░░░░░ amazing city It s ░░░░░░░░ beautiful city It s ░░░░░░░░ place that people visit ░░░░░░░░ all over the world ░░░░░░░░ also it s a ░░░░░░░░ city And people don ░░░░░░░░ necessarily shop in the ░░░░░░░░ ways that they did ░░░░░░░░ We have a lot ░░░░░░░░ companies here We re ░░░░░░░░ A I artificial intelligence ░░░░░░░░ of the world We ░░░░░░░░ starting to see the ░░░░░░░░ grow significantly how people ░░░░░░░░ how people move around ░░░░░░░░ city and drive autonomous ░░░░░░░░ you name it It ░░░░░░░░ happening here in San ░░░░░░░░ and it requires us ░░░░░░░░ make some significant adjustments ░░░░░░░░ how we use our ░░░░░░░░ establishments as well So ░░░░░░░░ think it s you ░░░░░░░░ the retail theft is ░░░░░░░░ a problem that we ░░░░░░░░ to address but it ░░░░░░░░ a problem that s ░░░░░░░░ happening in other places ░░░░░░░░ over the country as ░░░░░░░░
